Keeping Hair Dye Off Polished Nails

To keep hair dye from ruining your polished nails, wear tight fitting latex or nitrile gloves sealed around your wrists with tape. There are also suggestions, on this page, for removing any dye transfer that might still be bleeding from your hair days later.

A manicured hand next to a gloved and duct-taped hand, protected from hair dye.One thing that really irritates me is when I have a nice manicure and a bit of hair dye gets on my nails and they get ruined. I love to wear regular and glitter polishes, but they suck up hair dyes like a sponge.

The best way to keep your nails from getting ruined while dying your hair is to wear latex gloves and seal your wrists with duct tape so no water or dye can get in. Believe me, dye and water will still get in when wearing skin-tight gloves.

When you're washing your hair after the initial rinse (day 2, day 3, especially with semi-permanent dyes), and the water still runs with colour, you can try removing dye residuals off your nails with a mixture of baking soda and dish detergent, rubbing alcohol on a cotton ball, or non-gel gritty white toothpaste. Rub in circular motions on the nail until dye lifts.
