First, I must admit I am pretty new at sewing. Recently, in the last few months, I've been teaching myself to sew. I made a quilt when I was young with my grandma, so a few things have come back to me, but for the sake of this, I'm a complete rookie/novice.
My machine was working great and all of a sudden it was breaking needles, getting jammed up, timing off, and bobbin threads constantly getting stuck. I watched some YouTube videos and seemed to fix the timing issue. The straight stitch is working great now, I tested with 2 different thread colors and played around with tension. However, my zig zag (which was working perfectly before I messed with the machine after jamming) is now coming out terrible. The bottom (wrong side) is coming out correct, but the top is looking like just a thread down the middle with stitches on each side, kind of like a the threads on a football. (Best way I can explain it.) I've tried changing the tension, stitch length, etc. What else can I do or how do I fix? This machine was like brand new from a lil old lady; my grandma got it for me. She lives in a different state so I cannot get her help. I am halfway through this clutch purse that was a Xmas gift I am hoping to finish ASAP. I could use some help.
Thank you

It does sound like a tension problem to me. Check your manual again.
