Kittens Have Runny Eyes?

Are kittens that are 5 weeks old, with eyes glued shut and runny, contagious to other older kittens and cats?

They could be. I would be more concerned about preserving their vision, and would consult a vet.

Kittens and puppies open their eyes around 18 to 21 days. Your kittens are already 35 days old. This is not normal. Your kittens have an infection in their eyes and you need to see a vet.

If this is not treated soon your kittens can go blind.

Oo, I'd go to a vet. Anything around the eye could be harmful to them.

This is a common problem in kittens. Yes it is contagious. It normally results in blindness if untreated.

Very likely it is contagious. Something down the line of pink-eye. You may want to take them to visit the vet. Until then, to reduce their discomfort and remove the gunk, you can use a soft cloth moistened with warm water to very gently wipe away the goop caused by the irritation.

To give relief to your kittens (and you) take cotton balls and warm water and gently hold it on their eyes for several minutes, discard cotton and maybe try again later. This will help their eyes but it will not cure the problem. It can be contagious but may not affect an older cat as quickly. Try to keep them separated from other cats (not the mother of course) until you have taken at least one kitten to see the vet.

They should be able to give you medication for all of the kittens.
Cotton balls in warm water will help clear the "glue" from their eyes but the vet trip is necessary.

There is a film over cat's eyes that protects them. It's a good idea to see if this runny stuff is yellow or could be cause for worry. Here is a great article to read on the subject:
