Learning Frugality

A meal in a crockpot.Hi there I am Sharon, I live in NY and it's very expensive here. I have done a few things over the past few months to save money. We have a new store called Dollar General. Some of you have had it a while now. Today I learned about a download. I did it and scanned some coupons. You know what I mean, right. I went to the store and asked about the program.

I then added those items to my cart. I was blown away how much lower the prices were. I also added a few health items with coupons. I asked if they take the OTC card. Bless me, they sure do. So I picked up some toothpaste on sale.
I get to the register and the price was $57 and I had $40 cash in my pocket.
I looked around in shame, like, why hold up the line? The man asked for my phone number. I gave it and the total went down. Loved it. He said "swipe the other card." It was the OTC card. Oh lord, it went down some more. I ended up paying $27 and that was nice.

I am also blessed to now have the Dollar Tree. I went there and it was nice. I have health issues that stop me from cooking, Fibro being one I suffer from. I am eating a meal made with dollar store cheese, real at that. I joined a wonderful group here and on Facebook.

Every extra dollar I save goes on a bill. I don't care if it's one single dollar. I have shared savings tips but people tend to think I am crazy. I tell you I will be learning more this year.

Awesome Sharon! I live in TN and I shop at the dollar tree all the time, sometimes I shop at the dollar general only when I don't wont to fight the Wal Mart hell! I also do the thrift stores when needing none food things.
we just have to stick to your list when at the stores, I have a hard time doing sometimes. I then send my children in for me. LOL they know my money is tight! my older child is 30 years old.

Hi there from Missouri. My daughter's and I all shop dollar store and dollar tree. Great savings at both. Do any of your stores do price match out there? If one store has an item cheaper than the other store they will override their prices and give item to you at cheaper price. Have fun saving!

It is for reimbursement for over-the-counter drugs for people who have Medicare or Medicaid.

To be eligible for the OTC card you must be covered under Medicare Advantage (maybe Medicare part D) or Medicaid.
The OTC card can be used at many stores to purchase over the counter items like eye drops but not for actual "drugs".

You can contact your Social Security office for information and also to see if you are eligible. They also have a list of items that qualify for this card use.

Google OTC card stores (your zip) and you should get a lot of information.

I live in Canada but we have Dollar Tree stores here as well as Dollarama. I was in one of them recently and a shopper told me to check out Walmart in a special area because sometimes the same thing there might be cheaper than the dollar stores.

Where do you apply for an OTC card? Thru your insurance co. or Medicare website? I googled it but cannot find out.

Most of the information on the Internet about the OTC card is from insurance companies that explain how to use the card through their site/company.

  • As I stated in an earlier comment; people who have Medicaid or Medicare Advantage seem to be the only ones eligible for the OTC card.
  • Benefits for any of these services differ from state to state.
  • If you have Medicare Advantage Plan then you should be able to contact your local Social Security office to receive information about the OTC card (you may have to go in person).
  • If you are on Medicaid then you should contact the same agency as when you applied for this benefit.
  • Social Security Administration may be able to give you more information.
