Decorative Baskets from Oranges - handled basket ready to serveThis is a fun food craft where you can turn oranges into baskets that hold your fruit. It's fun and easy and you can really get creative with your designs! I've added two styles in this how-to.

Supplies:

  • oranges
  • paring knife

Steps:

  1. For the first style, cut the top and bottom off an orange. Save one of the end cuts.
  2. Decorative Baskets from Oranges - remove the top and bottom from an orange
     
  3. Cut a cylinder of the fruit out of its peel.
  4. Decorative Baskets from Oranges - cut a cylinder of fruit out of the peel
     
  5. Cut little triangles out from around one side/end of the skin.
  6. Decorative Baskets from Oranges - cut out triangles from one end of the skin
     
  7. Take one of the cut ends of the orange from earlier and press it into the orange bowl until it's tight.
  8. Decorative Baskets from Oranges - press one cut off end down into the bowl tightly

  9. Chop up the cylindrical orange flesh into bits.
  10. Decorative Baskets from Oranges - chop the orange into small bits
     
  11. Place orange bits into the bowl and serve.
  12. Decorative Baskets from Oranges - place cut up orange bits back into the skin bowl and serve
     
  13. For the second style with a handle, cut a bit off the bottom of an orange so it can sit on its own.

  15. Cut a wedge out of the orange on either side of the stem right at the orange's hemisphere.
  16. Decorative Baskets from Oranges - cut wedges out of the orange on either side of the stem to the mid point

  17. Gently cut the fruit away from the peel around the top.
  18. Decorative Baskets from Oranges - gently cut away the fruit under the "handle"
     
  19. Then cut the fruit at the hemisphere and pop it out.
  20. Decorative Baskets from Oranges - cut across and pop the fruit out
     
  21. Cut out the orange flesh from the bottom half, then cut all the orange bits into pieces and fill the basket you just made.
  22. Decorative Baskets from Oranges - cut the remaining fruit out of the bottom hemisphere chop and replace in the "basket"
