Place layer of tomatoes in 8x10 inch shallow serving bowl. Top with layer of onions. Sprinkle with salt, pepper, basil, 1/2 teaspoon sugar, 1 teaspoon vinegar and 1 teaspoon olive oil. Repeat layers, depending on number of servings. Refrigerate for several hours before serving to blend flavors.
