I am sorry to hear of the loss of your dog. He could have had rectal cancer or any number of things. Sometimes the only way to know for sure is to have an autopsy done.
Your dog could have been sick with parvo or had some sort of stomach infections that caused this. If a dog gets a hold of a bone from fish or chicken it can cut the inside of their stomach and cause this issue.
How heartbreaking for you to lose your dog. You have my deepest condolences.
Talk to the vet to see if he/she has any ideas of what happened since he/she knows the pup's history.
Sadly sometimes you will never know what happened, just like with people.
