I think most cans of spray paint say whether or not it can be used on styrofoam.

Wrong! Most spray paints will melt Styrofoam unless properly treated!!

Use latex, tempura, or acrylic or other water based paints. The solvents in most spray or oil based paints will dissolve the styrofoam.

Use "smooth foam " balls. I coated mine with gesso, then acrylic paint.
