Preparing Food for a Sandwich Bar Party?

I'm having a salad and sandwich bar party for my aunt in September. I'm wondering if I should pre-make some sandwiches, like a long sub sandwiches or have the fixings for everyone to make their own sandwich.

I always prefer fixings. Usually less waste because people won't pick things off and toss them. The no carbs people can choose no bread, the vegetarians can choose bread and no meat and the vegans can have lettuce and tomato and pickles! Everyone wins!! Have fun!!

Thank you, I think the previous answer is right. There could be a lot of waste. If the fixings are out, ppl can put exactly what they want on their sandwich instead of removing items already made on a sandwich.

dependson the crowd. I feel like an older or more conservative crowd would apprecite pre-made sandwiches, whereas a younger, more nonconformist crowd would want to make their own

That's an idea too! Some people in my family are such picky eaters, some are lazy and they would like to have the sandwich made for them. LOL!

A " build you own" sandwich bar would probably lessen food waste. However, you could include a few simple pre-made sandwiches such as pimento cheese, chicken salad or cucumber sandwiches.

You can impress your guests with the addition of dessert-like sandwiches such as strawberry shortcake sandwiches, pound cake sandwiches and a variety of cookie sandwiches.

Thank you, this is a birthday party, so I'm serving birthday cake only. That's a good idea for another kind of party though.

DIY sandwich bars are usually more popular with the younger group than with "seniors" but still a good way to feed a crowd - especially when you are not very sure of the number of people who will be attending.

  • I have always found that having a good assortment of spreads and condiments makes for a happier group of eaters.
  • Here is a site that I have used as they have a good list of spreads and several good recipes. One other item that almost everybody loves on a DIY is deviled eggs...

  • You do not say what type of food (or how many guests) so maybe a site like this could give you some ideas.

  • One of the things often overlooked is the type of utensils and paper products to be used. This is a very important part of planning and this is one of the places that I feel should not be on the "cheap" side as a leaky plate or flimsy forks will be remembered long after the food is forgotten.

  • Hope you have some help so you can enjoy the party along with your guests.

Thank you, that last site was helpful in knowing how much meat and cheeses to buy.
I agree with you about the containers. Years ago, I bought a lot of plain white plates, bowls, etc for my outdoor parties. I think any food looks great on white plates. I don't care for paper plates. I also have made an assortment of cloth napkins. My family teases me about my napkins but that's what I like! I scotch guard them, throw them in the wash and they come out looking new. It's the only thing I iron, I hate ironing but I love folding and ironing my napkins! The color for my parties come in the decorations.

Sounds like you are well prepared and don't forget - accept help so you can enjoy the party also.

I love using regular plates - so much more elegant and men love them even more because they many times wind up taking care of delivering the goodies to their spouses and friends.
