It kind of just depends on what you are using to soak up the gasoline. Cat litter works pretty good to soak things like this up out of the carpet. You may need to do a thorough carpet and upholstery cleaning with a degreaser to remove the smell also.

One suggestion is to scuff the area with coffee grounds. Coffee has a strong fragrance as well, but it's clearly more pleasant, thus it should be able to mask the gas odors.

Before vacuuming the upholstery of your automobile, let the coffee grounds sit for about a week.

Baking soda can also be used on carpet. Additionally, wait a few hours before cleaning it up.

Cat litter is an additional suggestion! In one to two days, a thin layer applied to the region should be able to eliminate the odor. Examine the carpet after vacuuming everything up.
