Repairing Bubbles in the Finish on a Table?

I have a lovely mahogany end table that has a bubbles in the finish. Do I have to remove the whole finish on the top or can I just do some repair to the blistered part? It will be hard to match the finish if I remove everything. Many thanks.

You can put parchment paper on the table, use a warm iron and soften the bubbles. You then open them with a knife to flatten them out. Here is the article with the details: www.hunker.com/.../how-to-remove-bubbles-in-a-tables...

The finish on your mahogany wood table has blistered. This is normally a problem with old shellac or lacquer finishes. Considering your table is not veneer it is not possible to use the parchment paper on the table. You will need to refinish the top of your table.

You will need to do a spot refinishing on the table. This will remove the old shellac or lacquer finish. You must repair the area first the damaged area first. Therefore, you will need to sand your table and get it ready to stain again with an oil-based stain. Spot refinishing only applies to the area that is damaged. This might work for you. However, this also depends on the age of your table and the finish on the table.
Here is an article on fixing damaged wood. Try a few of these techniques before refinishing your table. Remember, this is a wood table and not a veneer table so the repair techniques are different.

Lay a sheet of white parchment paper over the wood bubble. Iron the parchment paper with a warm clothes iron for 10 seconds.Keep doing this in 10 second intervals, but keep inspecting. If the bubbles remain put two layers of masking tape on them.Make a split through the center of the entire wood bubble, using a very sharp razor knife. Follow the direction of the wood grain, when cutting through the tape and wood.Scrape out any dirt or debris from underneath the wood bubble, using a toothpick. Insert a small piece of masking tape through the slit and into the wood bubble, to pick up the loose chunks of debris.Apply some yellow carpenter's glue to the entire surface under the bubble. Insert the glue through the slit you just cut into the veneer.Press down on the veneer and spread the bubble.Remove the masking tape from the veneer.

Lay a sheet of plastic wrap over the split to prevent the glue from oozing out and sticking to the flat wood blocks you are about to place over the plastic wrap.Place a couple of flat wood blocks on top of the plastic wrap to act as weights. Allow the glue to cure overnight with the wood blocks in place.

Remove the wood blocks and the plastic wrap. Lightly sand the veneer with fine grade sandpaper until the wood is completely smooth.

Apply wood oil directly to the veneer to prevent new bubbles from forming. Rub the wood oil into the veneer with a cloth until the table is completely restored to its original condition.
