As your bag is very important to you, might be worth taking it to a good shoe repair service for an estimate on repair. Most shoe repair services provide repairs for much more than just shoes-belts, leather clothing and other goods, etc. From your picture, it appears the bag's handles are not leather, however, a shoe repair service will be able to provide a good repair as they have the machines, tools and materials and expertise that most people do not have.
Pinterest has a great tutorial to fix purse straps like yours. All you do is find a ribbon that matches the color of your purse and braid it on the strap itself.
This has to be the absolutely most useless page for "thrifty fun" I have ever read. What's the point of asking if all you get as answer is to go to a shoe repair shop???? Come up with creative ideas for once.
I'm sorry you didn't get good advice. Some pages don't get good answers. You might look at the parent guide. The question has been asked several times and some of the answers are specifically talking about repairing them yourself.
