You can sew it or tape it. Depends on the type and condition of carpet and the extent of the damage. Sewing it is just as it sounds, you use a thick needle and thread and sew it up. Taping it is done with carpet tape and a hot iron. This is how a lot of professionals treat seams on carpet for unconventional sized rooms or shaped rooms (like L shaped rooms). The only other thing you can do if it is a small rip in an inconspicuous place is to hide it with a piece of furniture.
