Repairing a Smith Corona Word Processor?

I have a Smith Corona Personal Word Processor (PWP 6 BL). When it's turned on the carriage return and keys no longer operate, but the typing mechanism which travels along a rod will vibrate, but doesn't move. I have never had a problem with the unit. Does anyone have ideas on how to trouble shoot the issue?
