My typewriter allows me to type, but only half way through the first line of my paper. Any ideas as to why that is and/or how to fix it?

Your tab keys are probably set wrong. Reset the tab keys.
How do you reset tab keys?
You may have bent keys. Open the cover, take a look and straighten if necessary.

It may be your margin is not set right.
