SSI Benefits and Child Support?

When my son turns 18 and collects SSI benefits for low IQ in the state of Florida, will I still be held accountable for child support?

There is not enough information in your question for anyone to really offer any advise but it is for sure - you need to see an attorney.

Many support problems can be resolved by just following whatever was originally set up in the divorce papers.

Of course, either party can take the case back to court to seek a change in "anything". The change "request" usually comes about due to changes in circumstances - of either party (more or less income - changes in health (mothers/fathers or children) - moving, etc).

An attorney may be able to help you and still provide for your son properly.

One question -
Does your son draw SSI now? Why would he start drawing it at 18 if he has not been qualified to draw it earlier?

As I said in the beginning - you really need an attorney (may have needed one for a long time?)

I believe in true support for children - but it should not mean that total support should be "one-sided"?

Just to clarify my original post - I read your question incorrectly as it appears your son is presently drawing SSI benefits and will continue as long as he has health problems.

MY advice is still the same - see an attorney for legal advice on your situation. Thinking that you cannot afford an attorney may be an expensive mistake. An attorney can help you with a true assessment of everything without compromising your responsibilities.
