Shaving the Bone to Fit Dentures?

I had my remaining upper teeth pulled and immediately had dentures put in on 2/5/2015, 3 weeks ago tomorrow. I am getting many ulcers on the front of my upper gums and now the dentist said she thinks they need to go in and shave down the bone for the dentures to fit properly. She said I would have to go to an oral surgeon to have it done. Has anyone ever had to have this done and what can be expected?

I agree. Get a second opinion. The denturist that fitted my mom's dentures said that the bones will shrink considerably over the space of a year, and that dentures will need to be adjusted accordingly. Since yours have only been in for three weeks, it seems premature to be doing further oral surgery. Surely adjustments can be made to the dentures!

Hi Abigail If they shave your bone, it will give you a much better fit for the denture. I had mine done over 20 years ago. I felt no pain at all. It was done with Novocain at the time of my extractions.

Make sure You find a Dentist with many years experience in dentures. Don't be afraid to ask! Good luck!

I also had my bones shaved down upper and lower. They did it at the time of extractions And also put the temporary dentures in at the time too. I can tell you that so far I have had only one small sore spot because my denture fits well overall and the Dr said it was because of the bone shaving that had been done. My jaws were a bit swollen. I had 17 teeth removed. The others were removed at a previous trip to the oral surgeon. These extractions hurt about the same as the previous, only thing I noticed was a bit more swelling. The pain was a bit worse but not unbearable.

Is there any reason they can't shave the dentures to make them fit properly? Must you have oral surgery? I'd suggest getting a second opinion. With all the technology available nowadays, it seems fishy to me that they can't solve this problem by fixing the dentures themselves. Surgery will cost a lot more- no doubt they are billing your insurance for that?

They have to shave your bone because your bones will keep growing in your mouth I can't just shave down the Dentures to fit because your bones are going to grow again get to do it I guess I've had it done 3 times now

Im responding to the lady who said , Cant they shave the denture to make it fit? I was asking the same question. I had 22 teeth pulled July 13, 2018. It is now August 20 ,2018 and when I had my first mold done it hurt pretty bad. Ive lost a total of 23 bone fragments , splinters of bone and have many more thatheed to come out. I have an appt this Friday with the surgeon that did the extractions , but if its going to cost me then I cant do it.

I have dentical and my extractions and dentures are free, so I would think this part ( shaving) would be free too. But I dont want to suffer any longer. Over two months now without teeth!! Its embarracing! Any opinions are welcome. Thank you

Get it done im getting ready to get mine done it is not a piece of your tooth it is your jawbone and sometimes they work themselves out of the gums sometimes they don't. Your dentures will never fit correctly if you don't get it done. My sister had it done and is glad she did her dentures fit perfectly no pain at all. She says its the best decision she ever made reguarding her dentures

Too many people get good fitting dentures. I would not let them do any procedure on my mouth until I had a second opinion or keep working on the dentures til they get them to fit nicely! I'm sure there is a breaking-in period, but it shouldn't be painful or cause a need for your mouth to be invaded any further!

Sorry you have to go through this, but do get a second opinion.

Thank goodness my dentist does all an oral surgeon does with just Novocain and gas. He just shaved down my bones because they push through and if it is not smooth along the gum the denture will just hurt and not fit, so it's rare but it does happen. I just had my gum bones shaved down and I can feel what a difference it's going to make. The denture has to fit your roof from the gums, hope this helps someone.

I had alot of extra bone but fortunately for me the dentist who made my dentures wrote out a recommendation to the oral surgeon to do the alveoplasty (shaving the bone) before I ever went for the extractions of the 11 top teeth on Monday. Went Tuesday to the denture dentist and she only had to put in a soft liner. The top upper right is pretty tender, rinsing with salt water since. This last time I put a little orajel on the dentire, in that area, and it helped a great deal. Good luck.

I had all of my teeth, 26 to be exact, taken out on Wednesday, April 27. I also had to have the bone in my jaw shaved down and I had implants placed in the bottom jaw. The good thing about being sent to an oral surgeon is they typically put you to sleep. The surgeon I had was amazing, she gave me something in the IV to relax beforehand, knocked me out within about 30 seconds of being in the OR, about 2 hours later, I woke up, full set of dentures in place and it wasn't as bad as I thought. I am now on day 4 and it doesn't feel great. I love the new look and I know that this will all be OK soon, hang in there.

I just had this done today, I have some stitches and it was a little uncomfortable. I took 800 mg. I bubrofin. Which help a lot. now I have to wait another 2 weeks before being fitted for my permanents. I am so looking forward to getting them, my temps are falling out, and would love to have a salad.

May 8, 20170 found this helpful

Salad is easy. Put all your salad fixings in a food processor. You don't have to puree them so bad to where it's nothing but liquid but enough for you to be able to eat. If you have fixed any type of meat put that in the food processor mix all of it together and put salad dressing in it and it is amazingly good. Even after I'm able to chew salad I'm still going to fix it this way because it is actually better than a regular salad I know this sounds crazy but it's true!! Just try it.

I had my remaining teeth removed 3/15/17. On 6/15/17 I finally got my full set dentures. Three weeks prior to getting my dentures, the surgeon shaved down bones on upper and lower gum. He was excellent and I felt no pain. It did, however, sound like a 'jackhammer' in my mouth.
So four days in with my dentures I can smile again. Adjusting to the new normal.

I just had my bones shaved and literally took about ten minutes. I had twelve remaining teeth pulled about 5 weeks prior. The dentist just put a numbing agent on gum, slit it and ( well let's say it felt like he was digging a trench but no pain) he was actually filing them down. he then said it would feel like a big toenail clipper, and yep that's what it felt like, mind you again no pain. Then he did a file job again, like I said my gums had quit bleeding by then so no sutures were necessary just soft foods for a few days. All done in about ten minutes. Best part was no charge at all, but he had pulled all my teeth prior.

I jut had full top and bottom.extractions done.. where they shaved down th bone and cut the gums down ro fit my immediate dentures. After 6 days I am experiencing mouth pain and sore as the swelling has gone down. And now I have to get the bottoms adjusted.
Good luck. Painful but worth it in the end.
