I'm in over my head. It is my first time tapping maple trees and I can't cook it fast enough. I over tapped myself by not reading enough about how fast it runs when it's warm. What to do? How can I stop it? Do I take the tap out and let it drip down the tree? Am I hurting the tree by not stopping it from dripping? Can I plug it up?

Normally there is a season for tapping maple trees. The season is in the winter months. You can remove the tap from your tree now.
Step 1
Use a claw hammer to gently pry the spike from the tree. This should be easy to remove with a little pressure.
Step 2
Avoid applying too much pressure to the hammer and damaging the tree.
Step 3
After the spike is removed you are finished. There is no need to plug the hole.
Step 4
The tree will heal naturally during the summer months.
Step 5
Next winter when you tap your tree again locate a new tap hole. You will need to be at least 12 inches above or below the other tap hole and 6 inches to either side.
Only tap your maple tree during the tapping season. This is always in the cooler month of the year and not in the summer months.
