It may be a Lepisma Saccharina- better known as a Silverfish or Fishmoth. This insect love damp areas like bathtubs, sinks, baseboards, and damp areas , like basements. A insecticide will solve these - www.orkin.com/.../silverfish

These look like earwigs. Spray with an insecticide and seal up any openings so they cant get into your home.

You do not show a side picture but it actually looks like a snail to me.

You can always ask for help from your county extension agency as they have lots of information about things like this.

There are a lot of different types of snails.

Are they crawling or flying? I ask because they look more like larvae than an insect. You don't mention where you are located which could have some impact on what it is. When I first saw it it looked like a moth larvae or cocoon.

silverfish was my first thought too

in general they look almost like sea creatures - like crabs or something

am curious that cleaning the carpet didn't solve the problem, but probably insecticide is needed

you may try diatomaceous earth or boric acid; both are good for killing critters with hard exoskeletons
