Treating a Cat with Eye Discharge?

I have a 4 month old kitten. He has been coughing the past 2 days. I thought he might have a hairball. He has started sneezing and has white discharge coming from both eyes. Both eyes are clear and the drainage is not thick or mucousy looking. Any suggestions for an at home treatment? I do not have any money for a vet appointment right now.

You really need to take the kitten to the vet. He could be having some sort of medical condition that is causing him to cough and have this discharge in his eyes. This could be serious if not treated immediately.

You really should see a vet. I know you can't afford it so please use your zip code and search for free vet care and call around ASAP.

Eye discharges can mean an infection, and can cause blindness quickly. Don't take any chances and contact the vet.

All cats develop gloop in the inner corner of the eye, especially when they wake and haven't yet washed themselves. Normal gloop is usually clear or rust-colored. Indeed, as the clear gloop sits in contact with the air it dries out and becomes rusty looking - this is normal.

A yellow or green discharge is a sign of infection. If it is infection use polysporin cream with an antibiotic bought at most drug stores. Make sure it is for eyes.Clean your cats eyes regularly with a warm cloth.

If you feel the kitten is cleaning itself enough to have a hairball then maybe you could take him outside and see if he will eat a little grass or buy some of the cat meds made for this (pet store, Walmart, etc).

For the eye discharge, dip a cotton ball in plain warm water and wipe the eyes - gently - (new cotton ball for each eye). You can do this several times a day to at least give the kitten some comfort.

If you cannot afford to see a vet right away call your local ASPCA or your humane society and ask about a low cost vet or a local clinic. Some humane societies have vets to treat local animals.
You can also Google pet clinics with your zip code and see what is in your area as it is best if you can take your kitten to the vet soon.
