You do not say what led up to the needle being out of the machine so it's difficult to really know what the problem is.

Do you have a manual?
I feel sure your manual will have a section showing how to place the needle. If you do not have a manual you may be able to download one from here:

There are several very good YouTube videos on using this machine so check some of these to see if you can locate your problem

This can be a disengaged clutch, broken drive belt or internal drive gear failure. For more help on troubleshooting - https://www.justanswer.com

If the Kenmore sewing machine wont sew in reverse, then there may be something wrapped around the gear or the gear itself is broken.

So, check the gears: remove the cover; press the reverse button;

watch if the gears are functioning correctly.

If there is some oil stuck in the gears or cam, then warm up the lubricant while pushing the reverse button at the same time using your hairdryer (blow hot air on it).

Also check the spring that is attached to the reverse button on your sewing machine. Maybe it is misaligned and needs repositioning. If it is broken or missing, then you should replace the spring.

If the gear is broken, then you cannot repair it yourself. You need a qualified sewing machine repairman help.
