Turnip and Cilantro Soup

When I was a little kid, my parents used to call this "medicine soup," hence never really looking forward to eating it. Now that I'm a grownup and cherish my health more than anything on me, this is a gem of a recipe. Turnips and cilantro have been used as medicine for many years. Turnips have been dubbed nature's best antibiotic for centuries. I urge people to try this soup and perhaps use less commercial chemical cold medicines. By the way, as an adult now, this stuff is delicious!

Total Time: 1 hour

Yield: 4-6 servings



  1. Peel onion and turnip. Chop into small pieces. Chop the cilantro.
  2. Place all the ingredients except the salt, pepper, and lemon, into a large pot over high heat. Bring to a boil.
  3. Use a spoon to remove the scum that forms at the top.
  4. Reduce heat to low. Cook until rice and mung beans are very soft, about an hour. You can add a cup of water if it over condenses.
  5. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Squeeze the juice of 1 lemon into the soup, mix well, then serve.
