Thanks for posting this information. My toilet has been clogged for a couple of days and nothing has helped. The dawn dish washing liquid and the hot water did the trick! (02/10/2008)
Hot water+dish soap works! I just fixed my toilet problem within a minute. Thanks guys! (02/11/2008)
There are a lot of solutions posted that should do the trick. One warning is using hot water can crack the bowl, because the difference in temperature between the water in the ,bowl and hot or boiling water. If you use hot water make it not too hot.
Editor's Note Also be sure to start pouring the hot water slowing, to gradually change the temperature of the water in the toilet bowl. (02/13/2008)
This absolutely works! My upstairs toilet clogged for DAYS. I must have pumped the plunger 200 times over that period. Last night I put 1 c. dish washing detergent in, let it sit overnight and after the 2nd pot of boiling water this AM WHOOSH! (02/13/2008)
Amazing! I had tried all morning to unclog my toilet with the plunge and all I got was a big mess. It took only ONE try with a few squirts of dish soap and a pot of boiling water. DONE!
Thanks a lot! (02/16/2008)
OMG! worst ever toilet stuck and the water doesn't go down. A squeeze of dishwater liquid does it! OMG I can't believe it! Works works works! (02/17/2008)
OMG! worst ever toilet stuck and the water doesn't go down. A squeeze of dish washing liquid does it! OMG I cant believe it! Works works works! (02/17/2008)
This really works. I tried plunger, snake and chemicals but to no avail. The last resort was looking online and I found this and tried it. It works!
Thank you, Ben (02/19/2008)

I live in an old building in Hollywood with lousy plumbing and the dish soap (3 strong squirts) and some jamming down the throat of the toilet with a bowl cleaner did the trick. (03/01/2008)
One of my brilliant roommates decided to pour spaghetti down the toilet. We worked for hours to unclog and FINALLY dish soap (no hot water) did the trick! Thanks everyone! (03/03/2008)
My toilet was clogged for days, I just typed in what unclogs toilets and this page came up. I just want to say thank you so much! You guys and gals saved me from having to hire a plumber. The soap and the hot water works. If it is really clogged it might just take more dish soap, more hot water and plunging. WOW and it works GREAT! (03/06/2008)
The dish soap really worked! I was unsure at first, but now I really believe! THANKS! You all saved me! (03/06/2008)
I had clogged my toilet and it wasn't pleasant. It was late at night and i didn't have a snake or plunger. As a last resort I did a search and came across this site. I poured a cup of dish washing soap and slowly added boiling water. I let sit for 10 minutes and flushed. Nothing. I left the bathroom dejected and all of a sudden I heard a swoosh. It worked! (03/06/2008)
I had a toilet clogged with paper towels for almost a week. I'd exhausted all my ideas and was about to call the plumber. In desperation I searched the web and found this dish soap and hot water idea and tried it. Voila! It worked! Four or five good shots of dish soap and hot tap water (I was afraid to use boiling), and in five minutes I gave it a couple plunges and it dumped! Many thanks to the brainiac on this one! cbarnatwkdotnet (03/11/2008)

Thank you so much for the tip on Dishwasher detergent and hot water! Saved me from a lot of trouble.
Why are we not supposed to put commercial drain openers in toilet bowl? Does it kill the bacterias required for disintegration of sewage? Wouldn't dishwasher liquid have the same effect on the bacterias? Well, whether it does or does not , it sure unclogged the toilet! (03/12/2008)

THANK YOU. I took your advise (3 squirts of dish soap and hot water), and water did not recede right away. After I poured some water, it receded a little. I then used the ball type plunger twice. It worked!
From G_zilla (03/13/2008)
So, I'm babysitting and I've been feeling a bit jammed up lately. My stomach is killing me and finally I'm like: "Yay! It's time!"
I go in and, you know. Well, I almost passed out from the effort but finally I'm done. I glance down and I'm like: "Oh. My. Gosh. THAT poo is bigger than Bono right there."
I wondered if it would make it down at all, but I thought, what are you going to do with it now? So flush. Clog. I search for friend's plunger and yeah, they don't have a plunger. I pack up the baby, go to the store, buy a plunger and...yeah, Didn't Even Touch It.
So I'm having a small heart attack worrying about my friends coming home to the aftermath of the world's largest poo. It'll be pretty embarrassing to have to offer to pay for a plumber and, I mean, obviously I did it because they didn't do it and no one else has been there. Pretending it didn't happen is not an option.
I tried the dish soap as an absolute last ditch effort. I almost didn't do it because I thought that explaining a bubbly clogged up toilet would be even worse than explaining a regular one. But thank God I did!
Three big squirts. Let it sit a few minutes. Couple of plunges. Disappointment...left the bathroom. Friend calls and says they're on their way home. I think: "Well, one last try. And, huzzah, one small plunge later and No More Clog! (03/14/2008)
By Yay It Worked!
IT REALLY, REALLY WORKS. We were skeptical at first but just tried it and it worked. Thanks! (03/15/2008)
Well, I had a clogged toilet, thought the problem was fixed. Used a plunger on it and got the ever satisfying swirl. Several hours go by and the clog settles back in - at my wits end, I searched the web and found this site. Encouraged by the positive feedback by this odd method and frustrated by valuable time wasted with no results, I tried this way and after my second attempt - no success. I think this is a bogus method myself. (03/19/2008)
I was very skeptical, but the dish detergent and hot water really worked! (03/21/2008)
Call me a skeptic, but I was desperate. At home, toilet clogged and filled to the brim, the only one we have---for a family of 5! husband not due home for 4 or more hours.
Plunged-no luck. Put in soap--nothing happened. Went to store bought snake--no luck. Siphoned out all the water and put in hot water from bathroom sink---plunged twice more and VOILA! A clean functional (albeit a tad sudsy) toilet!
Thank you! (03/25/2008)
This really works. After much struggle, my 6 year old deposited what must have been a world record sized output and it clogged the toilet. It wouldn't flush, but would drain after a few minutes.
I tried the ball plunger, but it didn't work. Tried a drain cleaner with sulfuric acid and it didn't work.
Then after reading this I put a good squirt of dish washing liquid in the toilet, waited a few minutes while boiling a few quarts of water, then poured the hot water into the toilet and flushed. It went right down. (03/29/2008)
Toilet has been clogged since Saturday night. Sunday afternoon i decided 2 check internet. Thank you. The detergent and hot water really works! Thanks again. (03/30/2008)
Yes, I used this method today after I clogged the toilet. This was the fifth time I clogged the toilet, and the plunger did not work this time. Found your tip, followed it (three squirts of dish washing liquid, wait a few minutes, get a potful of boiling hot water and pour, wait a few minutes and plunge), and it worked like a charm! Thanks! It saved me from having to call apartment maintenance, and the embarrassment of explaining why the toilet was clogged in the first place! (03/31/2008)
I tried the hot water (boiling) and 3 squirts of dish soap. I'm not sure if that was what worked it out or not but I put about 16 cups of hot water in and plunged a lot, even emptied the bowl twice. When my husband came home he suggested plunging faster and that is what finally worked. It was certainly better than using additional chemicals! (03/31/2008)
Thanks a bunch for that privy information about the dish soap! I had tried everything including an auger, but none worked. Then I tried the dish soap/hot water and in 20 minutes our one and only toilet was unclogged PHEW! I was so worried that my six year old little boy would have to go and with no working toilet. (04/01/2008)
By Ms. Ireallydontwannagointhewoods
Thanks so much! My husband has been fighting the clogged toilet all night, and dish soap worked on the first try. I've never heard of this remedy before, but we'll remember it from now on! (04/01/2008)
The dish soap and hot water worked great! My son stuffed a bunch of paper towels down the upstairs toilet, this made it run OK. (04/02/2008)
I am amazed at how well this worked! I'll definitely share this with everyone I know!! (04/02/2008)
This worked for me too! Thanks! (04/03/2008)
Yes! Thank you very much! The dish soap/boiling water combination did the trick. I snaked and snaked the toilet, plunged for an hour to no avail before this. Thank you again for such a simple solution! 04/05/2008 (04/05/2008)
Awesomeness. unclogged in less than 10 minutes! (04/09/2008)
Yep - worked great, just like everyone else said. Put dish soap, waited, then hot water (slowly)...waited....then plunged. Nothing. Drain must have been slowly running however, because almost no water left in bowl. I flush again & the bowl starts filling too full again, so I feverishly start plunging & 'oila!'It drains completely and unclogs! This is after 45 minutes of plunging it with no effect! Thank you so much! (04/10/2008)
Wow, I was about to call the plumber. I have been plunging for a LONG time. Looked online, read this thread. Put in the palmolive and a big bucket of hot water, flushed it right down! Thank you thank you! (04/12/2008)
Try using a long pluming snake. If your toilet continues to clog it could be a problem with the plumbing or things could be getting thrown down that should not be. "stop putting paper towels down the toilet", says my father. (04/13/2008)
Another happy customer. It took a few tries, and draining the cold (dirty) water from the bowl so the hot water could do its thing, but it worked. The soap alone wasn't enough for this one, and it took a while for the clog to break loose once the hot water and soap was applied.
Oh, an important FYI: if your dog ever throws up his dinner right after he eats because he drank too much water too fast, DO NOT flush the regurgitated food down the toilet. (04/18/2008)
Like an idiot, I called the plumber first, then looked on the internet. The race was on and luckily, the plumber was behind schedule. After plunging both toilets and watching my bathtub backup for an hour, I tried the soap and hot water. First attempt worked within seconds. The second toilet came clean after a few plunges. It really worked! (04/19/2008)
I LOVE the internet! Was going nuts with a clog that was effecting both of my toilets! Came here and saw all of the rave reviews about dish soap and hot water, so OF COURSE I tried it! A about 5 good squirts of soap, slowly poured in a pot of boiling water, plunged about 10 times and then flushed. GONE! Unbelievable, truly amazing. Thank you, thank you, thank you whoever divulged this miraculous secret! (04/26/2008)
I was skeptical when reading this article about pouring hot water and soap for a stubborn clog. However I was turned into a believer, tried to unclog a toil for about half hour even used an auger and voila, tried the hot water and soap and it worked like a charm. Thanks a bunch! (04/27/2008)
Did it about 10 seconds ago, it had been clogged for a day from paper towels. I had blisters on my hands from plunging, so thankful I found this idea. I was very skeptical, but the minute I put the semi-warm water in, it worked instantly, no additional plunging needed! Thank you. (04/28/2008)
This is amazing. We flushed a toilet cleaning head down the toilet only to find it is was a disposable cleaning head and not a flushable one. We tried everything; multiple plunges, chemicals, even went and bought a plumbing snake. To our disappointment none of these worked. I was ready to quit and thought I would try looking online. Should have done that first and saved myself about $35. Tried this, and it worked the first time. About 4 squirts of dish soap, one pot of boiling water, and 10-15 plunges our toilet is back in action. Thanks for the tip. (04/29/2008)
Fantastic! After a vile day spent plunging and flushing to no avail, found this site and tried washing up liquid plus a kettle of boiling water. Didn't quite work the first time, though the pan did empty itself, very slowly. Tried again 15 minutes later, then plunged a few times and it went. Thank goodness. Feel thoroughly sick now though! (05/03/2008)
I can't believe worked! but it did. Thanks so much. (05/04/2008)
Car's in the shop so we're stranded at the house and plunging didn't work, and neither did the wire hanger. Two days with the clog and we were getting desperate when I looked online for a solution. Being someone who looks everything up online, I don't know why I didn't look it up sooner! We were about ready to walk to the store to get Drano. Glad we didn't have to do that. Thanks a lot! (05/04/2008)
By Thank you Thank you!
Can't believe it worked. I let the detergent sit overnight, and poured the boiling water in this morning. It unclogged after about a minute or so. Amazing, thank you very much for the handy solution. (05/06/2008)
1 c. Dish detergent + pot of hot water = unclogged toilet! Amazing! I love home remedies. So glad I tried this. (05/09/2008)
I thought everyone was crazy when I read the reviews on the dish soap and hot water and my toilet was driving me crazy! My cousin and his wife used to live where we live now and she used to flush baby wipes down the toilet and always wondered why they had problems.
Well when we moved in and they moved downstairs we inherited their plumbing problem. We were getting sick of having to plunge the toilet after every bathroom use and the plunger was usually no help anyways. Well today was one of those days so I did a search to see what I could do. I tried the dish soap thing and it was amazing. I know to never waste my money again. Thank You! (05/10/2008)

Worked great. My toilet had been clogged for 2 days and when we flushed any other toilet in the house it would come up through the clogged toilet. I tried plunging and also tried the snake but nothing. I saw this post and decided "WHY NOT?". I put about 3 squirts of dawn and 2 pots of hot water and presto.....the clog is gone. Awesome tip. (05/18/2008)
Mine has been clogged (no water) for a month, I poured the dish soap in, one big pot of water...warm, couple plunges and woosh, clog gone :) (05/19/2008)
I'm always the skeptic, but when you can't get rid of a clog, you'll try anything. The dish soap and a kettle of boiling water followed by a few plunges actually worked! Thanks! (05/20/2008)
This is great! The super hadn't come, we were looking at a day's plans ruined since we'd have to wait around for him, and searched the net for a solution. Everyone raved about this method (at other sites as well) so we tried it. It took about 15 minutes, and the bowl nearly overflowed with suds (my fault, I used too much dish liquid), but it eventually worked. Had some minor clogging the next day, but another squirt of dish liquid did the trick quickly. Stick with 2 squirts, and don't give up if it takes a while. (05/24/2008)
It Freaking Works! Got to say I was about to post a negative comment after trying it once, but went back and poured some more hot water and plunged a few more times and it sucked the water and everything right in! Darn awesome.
Here is exactly what I did:
Boiled about a gallon of water with dish detergent, I added about 1/2 cup of it, poured the hot water into the toilet directly, plunged a few times, added some more hot water, plunged about 4 more times and Barabim Baraboom no more clogged toilet. Thanks! (05/25/2008)
By It Freaking Works!
My toilet was clogged for 3 days. Everyday we worked on getting it unclogged. It was so bad that we left the house every time we had to use the bathroom.
With every plunge, it seemed as though I could plunge everything up, but not make it go back down. (GROSS)
I forgot I was going to look for a solution online 2 days ago, and right when I got online to find a plumber, I remembered to look this up.
I boiled a tea kettle of water and threw some dish detergent in the bowl while I was waiting. When the water was boiled, i put in half the kettle, plunged until it broke loose and started draining slowly, then threw in the other half and plunged again and it all went down so easy. I boiled another pot just in case I would need it, but by the time the other kettle was hot, the toilet was working beautifully. Thank you so much. (05/31/2008)

Thank you - this worked fantastically! Such an odd occurrence, appreciate the advice. (06/02/2008)
Wow, it really worked. At first it filled back up again but as I was going to send a bad comment, I found out it worked. And a really good thing happened, it cleaned our toilet too.
Just tried it and it worked in less than a minute! We used about 2 qts water from the instahot; poured in about a half cup of dish washing liquid and then the hot water slowly, waited less than a minute, plunged a few times and it freed up! Thanks to all (06/03/2008)
I went to a couple of sites and saw this tip. Then I came here and read the rave reviews. I squeezed some Dawn into the toilet and made the water just hot enough that I could still stick my finger in it. I poured the water in and the clog cleared IMMEDIATELY! Now I don't have to kill my roommate. (06/04/2008)
I almost can always unclog a toilet with a plunger. I'm like the queen of unclogging toilets. However my whole toilet was stopped up and I was freaking out. I couldn't plunge my way through this mess. So, I just tried the whole water and soap thing. In less than 2 minutes I just flushed and it went down, it is absolutely amazing. Thanks for the idea! (06/08/2008)
It worked! Hot water, dish soap, and relentless plunging! Thanks for the idea! (06/08/2008)
I told my daughters boyfriend about this site and method. The toilet was full and nasty. He said *yah well I'll run to my moms and get a snake, I know that will work!* I said well at the price of gas I would try this first. I think he didn't want to admit a senior citizen would know the solution. After I got home my daughter called all happy and said *Mom it worked! lol She was so glad.. plus it saved a 20 mile car ride and the gas! Yay me.
I mean TFC! lol (06/08/2008)
Boil some water (about 2qts)
1/2 cup dish washing liquid
Pour 1/2 the boiled water into bowl.
Pour 1/2 cup dish liquid on top.
Pour rest of water over that
Plunge, plunge, plunge,
If clog not cleared, add more water (hot is ok if not boiled)
Keep plunging and adding hot water.
If it doesn't clear, at least the stench is covered by the soap (bonus to this trick!)
Keep plunging and adding hot water- took me about 10 min overall.
Editor's Note: It does seem to help if you wait a few minutes after putting in the dish soap and give it some time to work. (06/14/2008)
Thank you! (06/15/2008)

Best solution ever.
I was desperate after my roommate decided to use 2 feet of toilet paper to wipe, and ended up leaving both the mess and the toilet paper in there. I was frantically trying to plunge to to no avail so I searched online.
After 3 pots of water and soap it was all clean. LOVE IT! Will be using this for probably the rest of my life. thanks :) (06/15/2008)
It did work, thanks a lot$$ (06/15/2008)
My mom and I just tried this literally about 15 minutes ago and it worked. I have to say, we were skeptical at first, but it worked. What we did was pour the dish soap in the toilet bowl and then slowly poured the boiling water in. We let it sit about 4 minutes and then plunged about three or four times and the water went down the drain. Then we flushed it and it was fine! It worked really really well. (06/17/2008)
Stupidly flushed 7-8 paper towels in our downstairs bathroom. Didn't realize it had clogged - next day while taking a shower in same bathroom, water wasn't draining and flushing toilet again made things worse.
Liquid Plumber in the shower drain, waited 4 hours - nothing. 1/2 cup soap in toilet, 1 gallon hot water, plunger immediately. After about 10 plunges, water flushed down toilet, and standing water in shower started draining.
Great advice, dish soap rocks!
Worked within seriously a minute. I was skeptical but this is the best way great way to unclog a toilet. (06/19/2008)
My daughter just clogged our toilet and spent almost 1 hr. to unclog using a plunger. I was ready to get a plumber's snake but hesitated since i think it will be too messy. I saw this solution and boiled a kettle of water, poured 1/2 cup of dish soap, it worked after using the plunger 6 times! (06/22/2008)
Thank you again for the internet community for giving advice on such a topic matter. I am currently visiting my girlfriend's house in the Bay area and found myself clogging their toilet by stupidly flushing 2 pieces of toilet paper down the drain. I ended up buying 2 plungers, the 2nd one being more high tech than the first, but none of them seemed to fix the problem.
My girlfriend's dad ended up using the toilet and found out about the clogging and called me out. Pretty embarrassing. He was planning on calling the plumber the next day, but I desperately searched online for a solution and glad I came across this thread. The trick worked perfectly and no more clog / embarrassment. THIS REALLY WORKS! Today is June 26, 2008 and I clogged the toilet. I was using the plunger and the water just kept coming up. I was plunging for like an hour >.<. Anyway, I turned to the Internet and I
1)Boiled water in a hot pot, 2) Let 1/2 cup of dish soap sit on the toilet,
3) Plunged, 4) Poured more hot water, 5) Let it sit for like a minute, 6) Plunged again, 7) Thought it wasn't working so I left for like another minute,
8) When I came back it seemed unclogged so I plunged some more and flushed and SCORE! UNCLOGGED. I don't know how long it takes for other people to unclog it but it works. (06/26/2008)
I just tried it and it worked! I even used environmentally friendly dish soap. I always thought you had to plunge while you flushed for some reason, but now I know better. (06/29/2008)
Genius! Stupidly, I dropped some doggy pooh filled paper towels in the toilet and I've been battling a guest bathroom clog for 2 weeks now. I even went out and bought an auger. Nothing works. I was hesitant to pour hot water into my toilet in fear that it would crack. I poured some Dawn Dish washing liquid in the toilet bowl and waited less than 5 minutes. Then I plunged 3 times and poof... it was gone. Yeah! (07/06/2008)

YES, YES, the dish soap and hot water did work for me! My grand daughter threw a lot a paper towel in the toilet and flushed. It was really clogged. We tried to unstop for hours using a plunger - it did not work. had to try the dish soap and hot water about 5 times and the 6th time it work! Thanks, thanks, thanks! (07/07/2008)
I tried this method before and it worked but last night I had a major stop up and I tried this for several hours. I even when out and bought a new plunger and it didn't work, but the old auger took care of it. So whoever mentioned using an auger, hey, it worked for me. (07/09/2008)
Thank you. Thank you. Just did this and it worked great. My son put 8 baby wipes down the toilet and clogged it super bad. My husband put a snake down the toilet and it still would not flush. I told him about this site and he laughed and said go ahead and try it. Well who had the last laugh, me. It worked. Thank you. (07/09/2008)
I can't believe that the dish soap and boiling water worked. I only had a little dish soap left so didn't think it would work but as soon as I poured in the hot water and pumped the plunger a couple times the clog cleared. I just couldn't believe it. My roommate was just as amazed as I was. I'm just so glad it did work, didn't want to have to spend money on a plumber! (07/11/2008)
I can't believe hot water and Dawn worked. It took 30 seconds and a couple of plunges. (07/12/2008)
My boyfriend is in Japan and the apartments fix it guys was out of town til late, so I gave this a try. One pot of boiling water and a couple shots of ordinary dish soap did the trick in about 5 minutes! Thanks so much! (07/12/2008)
After reading the posts here, I poured in a cup of dish washing liquid in my clogged toilet, which by then had emptied of water, and then followed it up with a pot of boiling water. I plunged and plunged, hot soapy water splashing all over the bathroom floor and on me. After about 2 minutes of plunging, I flushed, and the water came back up. I thought I had wasted my time. Then I read a post here about using a wire hanger to try to free up whatever was clogging the drain. I tried that, and resumed with the plunging. In just a few seconds, the water went down. I flushed, and it was okay. I'm so happy! I was about to call for a plumber. The dish soap, hot water trick really works. And if the clog persists, a wire hanger might just be the thing for you.
(b)Editor's Note:(/b) A cup of dish washing liquid is really a lot, just a couple of squirts is enough. (07/16/2008)
Thank you-this site is an absolute lifesaver. I was tearing out my hair for a whole week of wire hanger hell then I decided to search the net as a last resort and hey presto! I can't believe dish washing liquid + hot water actually works. LOTS of hot water. I didn't even have to use a plunger!:) (07/17/2008)
It totally works! I flushed my cats poop down and it totally clogged, then read this and it worked the first try! THANK YOU! (07/18/2008)

Thank you so much! We just moved into a rental and the toilet not working right. I used some dish soap and hot water and PRESTO it worked. (07/23/2008)
Amazing! I'm a natural skeptic but being so desperate and realizing a lot of cleaning products couldn't be used on my toilet, I gave it a shot. I squirted in some dishwasher soap, threw in a pot of boiling water, flushed. No solution. I plunged a few times, squirted some soap, plunged, flushed and it was done. Really soapy but it cleaned itself out. Definitely recommended. (07/27/2008)
I tried for 20 minutes to unclog a toilet with plunging without success. I got on the net and found this post. As my wife was calling a plumber, I poured the dish washing soap in the toilet and boiled water (when in Rome.....). Before she could make the appointment with the plumber, I had old faithful flushing like new.
Unbelievable but true. MMZ (07/30/2008)
I'm glad I don't have plumbing problems at home, but I am a housekeeper and had a clogged toilet at work. But it was only toilet paper that wouldn't flush. it wasn't Charmin, but was high quality stuff (saying that after reading about Charmin being heavy and causing clogs). Anyway, I actually use a cleaning cart. Since I work for a company so I had Ivory dish washing liquid in it. I was almost glad to have a clogged toilet so I could try this! lol ONE big squirt and flushed and the heavy TP flushed! I was like WOW. No wonder the TFC people brag on this! lol (07/31/2008)
It worked, but yes, use a lot of water and don't expect it to work right away. (08/06/2008)

Today is 8-8-08 and my daughters decided to put 2 rolls worth of quilted northern tp in the potty and flush....major clog. I plunged 3x thought it was gone boy was I wrong. Their dad used it number 2 and wham clogged even worse. So I got on line found this site and I had heard of the dish liquid thing before and thought no way will that ever work. So to top it all off 2 rolls of tp and a "mans" clog I tried it and after about a 1/4 cup of generic dish soap and 8 pots of boiling water..nothing.
I plunged til my arms ached, then I gave up letting it sit for 20 minutes. I went back in to the bathroom and low and be hold some of the water had gone down. I plunged about 4 more times and wah-la!the clog was gone. Thank god because i wasn't trying to call the maintenance guy to fix it and charge me $150 to do the same thing. (08/08/2008)

Oh My God, I am so glad I found this site. I plunged and plunged. My daughter put paper towels down the toilet and it did get clogged (boy did it get clogged). I used Liquid Drainer and plunged, did not work. Poured some Dawn down the drain. Plunged a couple times and man talk about a happy dance. I am a single mother so that saved me the time of almost calling a plumber. (08/08/2008)
Unbelievable. My 6 year old used paper towels instead of TP and totally clogged the line. After more than a day of liquid plumber and plunging, found this dish detergent suggestion. 1 cup of detergent and 2 qts of hot tap water. I hadn't even completely poured in the water when the clog gave. Thank you for the terrific advice! (08/09/2008)

I accidentally flushed a cleaning sponge, & tried everything including purchasing a toilet auger. But this is the only thing that worked! Thanks so much! (08/09/2008)

Um, where do I find the actual, proper instructions? Do you put soap in first then water? or both together? Help?
(b)Editor's Note(/b) Put a couple of squirts of dish washing liquid (for hand dish washing) into the toilet. Plunge a little then let it sit for a couple of minutes and follow with a pot of hot or boiling water. You may need to plunge again but many people find that this works quite well. If there is a toy or something hard stuck in the toilet, this will not work and you would do better trying to fish it out with a coat hanger. This seems to work for most natural clogs. (08/14/2008)
OMG. My 2 year old clogged our toilet with baby wipes AND at least a half roll of TP. Praise GOD it worked. REALLY didn't have the $$ for a plumber! Thanks for the advice! (08/16/2008)
Absolutely incredible! Plunging hadn't worked, Liquid Plumber hadn't, and an auger hadn't. This procedure worked perfectly the first time. Thanks for saving me several dollars for a plumber's house call. (08/18/2008)
This absolutely works; can anyone explain what makes it work? I was able to wait overnight and with another kettle of boiling water this morning and a couple of plunges we were clear. My bad for flushing a clump of kitty litter! (08/19/2008)
My hubby and I couldn't believe it, this really works! It only took a few minutes. Thanks so much. (08/20/2008)
Wow! That worked great! I can hardly believe it! (08/20/2008)
I just moved into my residence at university, and bam I clog the toilet in my shared dorm suite. None of my roommates are home and I was totally helpless. I tried plunging alone but no luck. Then I came across this, a couple dumps of hot water and plunging. Dish soap was the answer. thanks you saved me from a super embarrassing phone call. (08/28/2008)
I NEVER would have believed it if I didn't try it. I have been plunging for 3 days. I was just about to call a plumber and I found this site. Can't believe it WORKED! So glad I came across this site! Many thanks! (08/29/2008)

Adding boiling water & dish washing soap really works! I had the WORST clog imaginable and I tried everything and nothing worked until I used this method. At first it didn't work as quickly as others have claimed. But I repeated the steps multiple times with plunging and by the fourth time, it worked! yay! I was so close to calling a plumber, but I'm glad I didn't! :) (08/31/2008)
Thank you, thank you! I can't believe it worked. Thanks for all your comments, as it got me to try it and ta da! (09/01/2008)
I am the BIGGEST skeptic when it comes to this kind of stuff. NOTHING worked that I tried. I was ready to either cry or pull my hair out. However, THIS WORKED! I put 5 big squirts of liquid dish detergent, let it sit as instructed, then poured boiling water in the toilet, I let it sit a minute or so, started plunging and it FINALLY gave way.
Thank you because I didn't want to tell my husband when he woke up in the morning that I pulled a BIG TIME rookie move by clogging the toilet and now we would have to shell out bucks for a plumber. You saved my backside. GOD BLESS YOU! :) (09/02/2008)
Just like the rest of you guys it worked for me too (and I didn't even own a plunger) the toilet was clogged and water raised nearly to the top. So I squirted in some dish washing liquid, waited, then came back and poured in some boiling hot water. Nothing much was happening but with a coat hanger I pushed and prodded the clogged paper and down it all went! Thank you so much. Saved me so much time and money! (09/04/2008)
This is the bomb. I did it in 10 minutes. I didn't even have to plunge more than 5 times. I used a non name brand of detergent. I just squirted some dish detergent about 1/2 cup in toilet while I boiled water 2 mins and read these TRUE testimonies then I poured the water in toilet, let sit for 5 mins while reading more TRUE testimonies on how it works then I went back and plunged, noticed the water was going down so I flushed and UH its a beautiful thing especially for my wallet. My son dropped a nectarine seed in the toilet, it still had some of the fruit on it. It was down too far in the toilet to retrieve it - so he says. Anyway I've tried everything except the plumber.
I just tried this dishwashing liquid trick - I'm still waiting - I hope it works.
By fruit in toilet!
This is fantastic! I plunged on this clog for 1/2 a day! I have never had such a clog. I'd heard of trying hot water before, so I had put in a bucketful. Now, I had a clogged toilet full of dirty hot water. I searched online under 'hot water to unclog toilet' and found this info about the dish soap. So, instead of dipping out the nasty hot water into a bucket first, I just put in three big squirts of dish soap, then boiled a pot of water.
When it was ready I poured it in the toilet, which brought the water level almost completely to the top. I waited about 10 minutes hoping the clog would just clear up completely, or at least drain some so I'd have room to plunge. Well, it didn't drain at all. So, I through caution to the wind and plunged anyway. It took about 20 'gentle' plunges and the clog and water drained away with a very satisfying sucking noise! I poured in two more buckets of hot water for good measure, which both drained.
Then, I flushed the toilet three times just to make sure. I am so relieved that I took care of this before my husband got home. Thanks for the great tip! (09/09/2008)

THANK YOU! My toddler flushed a large handful of baby wipes down the toilet and for a week morning noon and night my wife and I have been plunging to no avail. I was about to make the dreaded call to waste some more money on a plumber when my wife found this site and she immediately tried this procedure and PRESTO! IT REALLY WORKS! Our toilet works better than it did BEFORE it ever got clogged.
THANK YOU! (09/11/2008)
This is excellent! Happiness and long life to whomever initially posted the solution. I had accidentally flushed a disposable razor 2 days before the clog backed up. I used palmolive--4 generous squirts. Let it sit while the kettle boiled. Poured the hot water and let that sit for 10 minutes. Then I used the plunger a couple of times. I repeated the process and flushed 3 times. All is good now. (09/12/2008)
Worked GREAT! Saved my life other bathroom is being remodeled so only had one toilet in main house! Thanks (09/14/2008)
Thanks so much for the idea after 4 days of clogged toilet i searched the net and this worked fantastic. I did do some plunging but was working in 15 minutes. (09/20/2008)
I had no plunger so I tried using the wire hanger...didn't work. I googled how to unclog a toilet without a plunger, and this came up! I used detergent AND dish soap and i used a stick to stir up the bubbles. Then I dumped a huge pot of boiled water...flushed and TADA! It went down...slowly, but it did. I repeated it again to get a better result. No plunger needed! (09/22/2008)
OMG! This really does work! I found out about this website in Reader's Digest and put in my problem and it was all free! Thanks! (09/24/2008)
My toilet has been clogged for days. My kids flushed baby wipes down the toilet and I haven't been able to unclog them until I found this website. I had no idea that dish soap would work. Whoever figured this out is awesome. Thanks a lot. (09/24/2008)
So easy and simple household products! Boiled hot water, let half a cup of dish soap in the toilet in the mean time. poured a little bit of the water in, plunged a few times, added more water, plunged a few more times, flushed and tadah :) (09/26/2008)
Thank you, thank you! After HOURS of plunging and yelling at each other, myself and my husband somehow came across this great idea. We were a bit skeptical at first, but we were desperate, and it worked! I now have a toilet full of soapy suds- which is much better than what was there before!
Thanks heaps! (09/29/2008)
This works. I just tried it. My toilet has been clogged up for a few days. Thank god I have additional bathrooms in the house. Anyways, I did this about 5 minutes ago. Let the water get low again and put the dish washing liquid in the toilet and waited about 5 min and poured about 3/4 bucket of hot water in the toilet and then plunged. Now it's unclogged! This is genius! Thanks! (10/02/2008)
Apparently there's a wrong and right way to plunge, and I was doing it the wrong way. I finally got the clog free, and I imagine the soap and hot water helped a bit. (10/05/2008)
After 2 bottles of drano and a wire hanger I was getting desperate to get my toilet unclogged. At first I was skeptical about the dish soap doing the trick but at 1 am you're willing to try anything, especially in a one bath apartment. I couldn't believe it when after only a few minutes of plunging I could flush my toilet again. Thank you so much. (10/05/2008)
I am staying at a hotel, and have been here about two weeks. I clogged the toilet, and was really upset about it. I didn't know what to do, so I found this thread, and decided to try it. I put the soap in the toilet (three good squirts)and left it in there about 20 minutes.I started boiling the water. I then took a plastic coat hanger and stirred the mix around.
The water had gone down to about half the toilet bowl at this point. I poured about half a pot of boiling water, waited 1 minute, then flushed it. It rose to the top, so I frantically turned the water valve off. Thank god just before the water came spilling out. lol. Then it sat there at the top of the bowl, and finally shot down the drain after about 1 more minute. I am so glad I tried this, I am laughing so hard it's difficult to type. Thank you (10/06/2008)
YES, it all works. A combination of all the things on this page will flush away your problems. Just keep doing the soap and hot water thing over and over while combining plunging, hangers, snakes, etc. It could take up to an hour and a half, I know from experience, dude. Husbands laugh not at your wives, and wives...do not YELL! As for all the doubters and haters, you lack the determination and patience to see it through till the end. (10/08/2008)

We only have 1 bathroom and my son decided to use a bunch of the Cottonelle wipes, stopping up the toilet. I used 3 generous squirts of dish soap and about 5 cups of boiled water. I plunged for less than a minute and the clog was gone. (10/12/2008)
Another happy customer! Similar story as many others - my 3 year old used a LOT of TP and after days of plunging and snaking, nada. This method still took a while, and a second application of soap (and total of three kettles full of boiled water), but voila - in the end, magic! (10/12/2008)
Unbelievable! This is the BEST method I have ever tried! Bravo to whoever came up with this idea, and THANK YOU! You just saved me from major embarrassment! :) (10/14/2008)
IT REALLY WORKS!
My sister and I were just finishing making lasagna when she went to the bathroom to replenish the TP and found clear water running over from the toilet. We tried plunging, to no avail. The we decided to try and remove some water to the tub, but to our surprise the tub had clear water backing up also.
What a mess - we were just getting ready to make a call to a plumber, but then I remembered just reading an article in Reader's Digest about unclogging a drain with Dawn dish detergent and hot water. What would it hurt to try? We had all the ingredients.
So we did and now the drains are working better than before. Since we both have septic systems we decided to make this a "monthly" maintenance chore. For any skeptics - which included my sister - it really did work. We saved the expense of a weekend call to a plumber. (10/19/2008)
