Value of an Antique Dickens Book?

Value of an Antique Dickens Book? - title pageI have this "Our Mutual Friend" book by Charles Dickens. I have not been able to find another like it online to reference how much it's worth. It says it was published in 1871 by D. Appleton and Company. It also includes the American Cyclopedia in the back of the book. It looks like it is in fairly good condition and I will add pictures above for reference. I was wondering how much this is worth if anything.

I see why there is a lot of confusion on this book. There are Dickens Books selling from 1.00 into the thousands. I am always surprised when I can't find an exact match to something--so I wonder if this is only ever sold with the dust jacket and that is why I can't seem to match the cover to any example in any of my resources.

My best suggestion when there is something with such wide values and so many options on what the covers look like, is to take it to a few places who specialize in old books and ask. I would go in asking if you need to insure it and if so, how much.

This way they will tell you if it is one of the $1.00 versions, a $9.99 version, a $200 version or one of those (rare) in the thousands.

I usually get 2-3 looks so I can see if the responses are consistent. By going in asking for information (for insurance) not values, you should get an idea of what you have.

Once you know exactly what this (based on the market) is and if it is part of a series (which I am pretty sure it is since it says it was sold by subscription) you can figure out a resale price for it.

Also regarding condition, you said it looks fairly good. To me, it looks fairly bad as it deep creases, lots of rubs and bent corners. That said, I am not a professional grader--so when you have it looked at, I would ask how they would grade the book. It is probably fair, but they can give you a better guide than I can. They can also see and smell it--smell has a huge impact on condition as even a whiff of mildew or "basement" smell can take a thousand dollar book into the low hundreds very quickly.

Post back what you learn! I hope you have one of the ones with a high value!!

This looks like the back of the book??
If this is the case then you should have pictures of the front and better pictures of the overall condition of the book as without better pictures no one can evaluate a book.

If the book is very valuable no one would even try to give a value from pictures but just regular (even antique books) books it can sometimes be given an approximate value.

There are just so many different versions of this book it will take a knowledgeable person to come close to giving you any substantial information.

Take better/more pictures and post it on these sites and maybe you'll get some answers. You will have to join the groups.

If this was my book I would go to an auction house to start off with and have the book looked at by one of the experts at the auction house. They can give you a fairly good idea about how much the book is actually worth. If this does not help visit some antique book stores in your area and talk with the owner of the shops. Tell them that you have this book and are looking for an idea of the value of the books.

You are thinking if the book is worth a great deal of money that you'll need to ensure the book in case something happens. Just by the photos, it is hard to say how much this book is actually worth. Only a bookseller or an auction house has the means of examining the book and determining the real value of this book.

Hi,

This book is beautiful! It looks like it could draw in over a hundred dollars, or even more. I think it would be worth taking in for an appraisal or even, better, to take a photo and have it appraised online.

I think it will be appraised at above $200.00.

Have a wonderful day!
