What Breed Is My Dog?

What Breed Is My Dog? - closeup of faceCan someone tell me what breed Oscar is? He was a stray, but the most lovable dog ever. He looks like he has the body of a Staffy or Pit Bull, but the head of a Jack Russell?

I think he is part beagle. He is definitely a mix of several breeds.

Oscar is 100% handsome!!! I see a lot of lines of a German Shepard in his face and coloring. The tail looks like a beagle, the paws and haunches also look hound/beagle like.

I don't see any Jack Russell or Staffordshire Terrier lines, but that is just my eye.

Has the vet weighed in? Vets look at hips, jaws, teeth, and bone structure against breed standards.

Wishing you and Oscar lots of happy adventures! He looks like a happy boy!

I think he has some German Shepherd in him and possibly a little basset hound. Actually, I would guess he could easily be a mix of several breeds. Mutts are typically smart, affectionate and very loveable.

He does have some beagle in him and he is mixed with more than one breed of dog. He is cute. What my dad use to call dogs like this was Heinz 57.

I am not sure how he came up with this and he never really told us. He would just say that is an adorable Heinz 57 mixed dog.

Heinz 57 is what we call them in Pittsburgh! This is because Heinz was a Pittsburgh institution and made here for many, many years!

In my family we grew up we referring to dogs and cats that were mixed breeds as "Heinz 57s" because they were a "special mix of secret" ingredients". Basically, if we called something a Heinz 57, no one was sure what the breed was, but it sure was good because it was here!

Do you have a Pittsburgh connection? Maybe that is where your Dad learned the expression!

My mom called her mutt breed dogs "Heinz 57" when I was growing up too, in Seattle, Washington. :)
