How long can fleas live without a host?

I was told it could be as long as year, but don't take that to the bank. I do know it's a long time.
The eggs are still hatching. Vacumn every day and they will soon be gone.
We bought a house that had sat empty for about 18 months. The previous owners had a dog. We moved in and the place was full of fleas so, at least 18 months!
