It appears to be infected, or could possibly be a wart, or maybe a burn. In any case, you should definitely have it checked by a Physician.

This could be a Wart or a Blister. A Wart would be harder in touch, and Blister softer to touch. Can be a little painful depending on location. Here is more of the difference of the two .

Could be Calcinosis. I get these too. They usually go away on their own. If it doesn't, talk to your doctor. They can be VERY painful. Do NOT try to open it.

You do not say how long he has had this bump so 'time' may make a difference as to what it could be.
I would suggest you mix a 1/4 cup of Epsom Salt in a cup of hot water (heat it hot and let it cool until it feels okay to you but it does need to feel a little hot).

Let it be hot enough that he can just dip his finger in and out until he can leave his finger in the cup to 'soak' for about 10 minutes.
You can reheat the salt water and use it several times a day, especially before bedtime. This will draw out the pain and any infection and should reduce the size of the bump.

If this is not possible then you should take him to your pharmacist and let him/her suggest a product to use and they should be able to tell you if he should see a doctor.
Most people do not know that a licensed pharmacist has as much schooling (sometimes more) as a general practitioner and has to study continuously to keep up their license and new medications.

He could have pinched or even burned his finger. There are times that this happens if he has gotten a small thorn inside. If you don't want to open this up yourself and try to drain it I would suggest that you see a doctor. You can try soaking his finger in warm water and Epson salts to see if this will help it drain faster.

A lot of times after the finger has soaked for 10 to 20 minutes it is easy to push on this area to get whatever is inside out. Any type of infection like this on the tip of your fingers really hurts.
