People in Pittsburgh use Saran wrap... name brand or generic. Some use special plastic sheets that look like Saran from the home stores. Others who don't like that route, put towels along the sill and ledges. Some of our friends have colorful woven rugs from the Dollar store or five below maybe that they hang using shower curtain rings off tension rods so in the spring they just pop off. We have heavy lined winter drapes we use in our bedroom which is the coldest room house.

I like using double-sided tape and thick trash bags. Bubble wrap is supposed to stick, by itself, if placed on a wet window. I would also put hooks above the window and place a blanket over the plastic. I usually sew loops on the top sides of the blanket for easy removal.
There are hooks available that dont harm the wall.

I always use a door snake, they are easy to make with a sewing machine and sand
I also use towels and have also used plastic bags. Or sometimes craft paper,the big kind and if it's black even better because it keeps the light out. Same with bags
