I have two finches, a male zebra finch and a female Hecks Grass finch, they laid an egg and they have been sitting on it 24/7; it should hatch this week. But I just read that only the same type of finches can breed. So is it possible that the egg will not hatch?
I think it will hatch. Usually infertile eggs are abandoned.
I have read so many different things.
Some "experts" say it is OK, some say it is not OK to breed mixed breed birds. All say it is possible to breed, but often what happens is that the birds get the worst of both breeds and do not survive (so sad because this is so different from dogs and cats where mixed breeds are often the sturdiest and healthiest of the animals).
If the egg is not viable or is hatched and short lived, you may want to separate the birds to prevent future breeding.
Mother Nature is both amazing and cruel. I hope you have a good experience.
Post back with an update. Prayers!!!
My female finch has just laid 4 eggs. Can I leave the babies in the same cage when they come out of nest? I have a large cage.
At 6 weeks you should separate the babies from their parents and put them in a different cage.
The finches laid eggs in their food, what do I do? There are 3 eggs in there, do I move the dish? Do I add anything so they can cover them? Do I just leave them alone and see what happens?
I would leave them alone. They may be infertile eggs and that is why they are laid there.
I just wanted to check in and see how the eggs are and what happened.
Birds know if their eggs are viable or not and are usually (not always) but usually good at doing what is needed if they are viable.
I have friends who raise these lovely creatures and the rule they use is the mark the date the egg was laid and if after 20 days nothing happens, they carefully remove it. Now if it starts to smell, or other damage occurs, they remove it sooner, but they have a 20 day rule. I am not sure if that is just their rule or that is what all finch birders use. It works for them.
Hope things went well!!! Baby birds are just so sweet!!
