When I was a kid back in the 40s-early 50s, growing up on a farm without running water or any type of indoor plumbing, we had a sink in the kitchen. But we also used a metal washbasin in it to hold the water, then underneath where the drain was we had a five gallon "slop" bucket, that we let the water run into.

This bucket had to be taken outside and emptied at least once a day. For doing dishes we had a "dishpan" that we sat on one corner of the kitchen table and filled with warm water to wash the dishes in. When done, we carried that outside and emptied the water. We also had to have water hauled out to the farm from town.

Hope this helps you out. I don't know if they make anything like metal pans that are sized right for washing up or doing dishes. All I have seen in the stores I go to are plastic ones.
