Saute onion in margarine in large heavy saucepan over low heat for 5 minutes, or until the onion is translucent. Add chicken broth, tomatoes that have been crushed, parsley, bay leaves, basil, paprika, sugar, cloves, nutmeg, and pepper to the onion in saucepan. Cover and simmer for at least 30 minutes. Remove and discard bay leaves. Add salt, if desired. Makes 6-8 servings.
