Travel Safely this Summer

Yesterday morning I heard news that a friend and beautician who cuts my hair had been killed in a car wreck. Normally I wouldn't post an article about something of this nature, but in spite of the tragedy and loss to her family, there is a valuable lesson for drivers which should be passed along.

She, her Mother, and 16 year old daughter were returning from a shopping trip. On a busy interstate, a cardboard box they were transporting in the back of their truck, blew out of the truck and onto the highway. Instinctively, she pulled into the emergency lane, and attempted to back up to retrieve it and was hit by an SUV. She and her Mother both died and the Daughter went through three surgeries in a day to try and keep a nearly severed arm.

The point I am making is: I have seen so many people attempt to back up on an interstate when they've missed an exit or for some other reason. Better to drive several miles out of your way than to be in a predicament such as this. Summer's finally here and there will be a lot of traveling. Please drive safely.

I am truly sorry. Drivers sometimes forget how fast an accident can happen. A lot of my friends are riding motorcycles now(Baby Boomers) so please remember they can not stop as fast as you can in a car.So PLEASE WATCH for BIKERS this summer.THANK YOU!!

I am sorry for your loss. I work for a State Hwy Dept that has a Interstate system and I see all the time. My prayers are with you and the friends and family.

I am sorry for your loss. That is a very hard lesson. When I was learning to drive many years ago, my father taught me to NEVER, ever back up on a highway or interstate. Find a turn off and do the necessary turning off the main thoroughfare. Since then I have learned reversing directions on a city street isn't safe either. By watching other drivers and seeing what happens to them I find this quite valuable information.

Later, when I took a driver refresher course for us golden oldies, they gave turning/backing information too briefly, but not adequately in my opinion. FYI Defensive driving is basically keeping out of the other persons' way. Better safe than sorry.
