Softening Potted Plant Soil

If the soil in your potted plants is hard and water has a hard time penetrating, poke holes in the soil with a pointed stick. then fill your water pail and add 1-2 drops liquid dish washing detergent. This will soften the soil and allow water to penetrate more easily. Add the detergent after the pail is full, otherwise you'll have lots of bubbles.

Our potted plants love having that little bit of dish drops in the water, the phosphates help protect them from bugs as well (mites). Another thing, I just set my plants in a bucket all the time for a soaking. Many plants need to be bottom watered.

They also need to be lifted from their pots, shake the soil to loosen it, untangle the knots the root system gets into, if long, trim them out and stick back into the pot again.
