Soak rice in water 15 minutes. Heat 2 tablespoons shortening and fry onion until light brown. Add cumin seeds, cinnamon sticks, cardamoms, bay leaves, and cloves; fry for one minute. Add peas and fry for another 5 minutes. Add 4 cups water and salt. When it comes to boiling point, add soaked rice, stir well and cover and steam until done.
