I want to make some fossils for my nephew and then have him dig for them. Can you buy sand? I know you can in the summer for sandboxes, but I am not sure about this time of year.

You should be able to buy sand year round at lumber type stores (Lowes, Home Depot, etc). Big bags of it, like 50 lbs, that is.
Most building supply centers sell sand year round.
Sand used for sandblasting is really fine sand. You might like that kind.
