We are renting and our well pump broke. It took over 4 months to fix and so these trees have been through a summer in Ojai California (high temps) all summer. The landlords say that now that the well if fixed we just have to start watering, but I am not so sure.
IF you do not start watering them again, they will die. Now, you can start slowly so as not to 'drown' them. The problem with trees that have spent a lot of time in drought is that the root structure becomes loose, so that when excessive water comes back and loosens the soil, the trees can fall over. If you water them slowly you should avoid this problem.
Water very well 2-3 times a week. This will encourage deeper root growth.
My avocado plant is about 2 yrs old. It grew pretty tall, has huge leaves and a couple branches. I went on vacation and my plant waterer failed miserably and I came home to 1 dead and 1 mostly dead avocado plant.
The leaves have mostly fallen off, but I see new growth at the top. Can I cut the top bits off and replant in hopes to revive it?

If you do cut off the top pieces, put them in rooting hormone first before you plant.
I live in Florida and have a small Mexicola avocado tree. It has white powdery places on the trunk. I am not sure what it is or how to treat it.

We had a Hass avocado tree in California. Then it died or we thought it did. It has begun to grow, but we believe it is below the graft. If we let it grow will the avocados be good to eat?
I read somewhere that most of the California avocado trees are grafted on to either Topa Topa or Zutano. Thank you for your help!
Make sure you remove any suckers that appear below the graft. If you don't do that, it will affect the fruit.
I have a tree that's only about three feet tall. One day I noticed that the top was dying, my first thought was to cut the top off so that it wouldn't spread.

This shouldn't be a problem. Normally avocado trees need a good cutting back after bearing fruit. When we trim the trees we always cut off the tops of the trees and the top branches.
Your tree is rather large and needs to be trimmed back. If you don't have the knowledge or resources to trim the tree, you'll need to call a gardener to do this for you.
The top of the tree will grow back again and produce new branches. Most of the time this is excellent for your tree and yields a higher crop next year.
I had an avocado plant; it was growing good it was already 8 feet tall, but one day I went out and when I got back home my plant was cut. They cut the top part off where the leaves were growing. What can I do to get it to grow again? The steam is still green!

Don't worry an avocado is a tree and it will start new branches from its trunk. Some people "pinch" or cut the top of the avocado shoot at a very early stage of its growth so that it will start new branches and get stronger. You too would have had to cut it anyway. Just relax and watch it grow.

Dude, you HAVE to fertilize! With nitrogen in fall or winter.
My avocado tree is about 12 years old. It's planted in the ground, in Orlando. Each branch is turning brown and looks like the tree is slowly dying. It gets adequate water and fertilizer. I am not sure why it's dying. Is the root rotten?

When you are seeing your avocado die back immediately stop fertilizing and cut back majorly on the watering, water ever is normal schedule do 1 third of it for example if once a week then once a month if once a month than once every three weeks because over fertilization can happen and root rot. Since there is no way to check just do those to steps and pray it recovers if not then next time you'll have this experience as a tool, happy growing and don't worry it may recover and things happen.
I have grown an avocado tree. I would like to know what people mean by pinching back so as to get a rounder fuller tree. Do I pinch the top off the tree or just the leaves?

I have a tree which is ten year old. It is not flowering. So I assume it is not old enough for flowering. Is there anything to do for that, like pruning or something else? My place is a hilly region with a tropical climate.

i have grown an avocado plant from the stone in the fruit. Once I planted it, it grew really quickly for some time, and then just stopped. I moved it into a better sun position and it grew some more. It's still in the same spot, but it hasn't visibly grown for months now, not even sprouting new leaves. It still looks healthy. Its presently about a foot tall. Its an indoor plant, also. What's going on? Do I have a plant that's afraid to grow or something? =)

Should I cut back my avocado? It's 2 feet tall with 9 leaves on the very top, but none anywhere else. The ones further down on the stem don't grow at all and just fall off. Should I cut it back to 6 or 8 inches and hope for the best?
