Susan: ThriftyFun Says Goodbye
Susan: ThriftyFun Says Goodbye
It is with heavy hearts that we report the passing of Susan Sanders Kinzel, our founder and beloved mother, sister and friend. The illness was sudden and swift and she died on December 21st, 2008.

Here is a little bit about Sue from the obituary.

Sue died quietly at home on the evening of December 21st with her beloved children at her side. Sue loved the beach, her dogs and cats, Native American artwork and the planet. She loved coffee and popcorn and even co-authored a book with her son about roasting coffee at home. She loved to laugh until she cried. And she loved her family, the ones she grew up with, the ones she gave birth to and the ones that she adopted into her heart. Our sorrow is beyond words.

She was an entrepreneur at heart and ran art related businesses most of her life. Sue was a very creative person and an artist since her teens. She created works of art with beads, sewing and leatherwork. She also was a musician and songwriter. Sue was the founder, with her sons, of ThriftyFun.com, an online resource for frugal living and general advice about doing more with less. In the 10 years prior to her death, the website had grown to serve thousands of people per day across the internet and provide a livelihood for several people. Sue was the driving force and the inspiration for the website, having endured years of less than ideal living conditions.

We love her and miss her,

The Staff of ThriftyFun

Lewis, Fletcher, Jess, Sally, Laurel, Kezia, Stella and Mara.

I printed this article when it appeared last year. I am one of those people who considered Susan a friend, though I never met her. She did so many sweet things for me. I have smiled into her beautiful face on my bulletin board every day for the past year, and still miss her in spite of the fact that you have all done such a wonderful job of taking over where she left off. She would be proud of you all. I shall never forget her.

Thanks so much for your wonderful kind words. Susan, in her quiet, compassionate way was always helping others; family, friends and acquaintances. ThriftyFun's success was a joy to her; that in helping others, she could support herself and others.

It has been almost a year since dear Susan left us. I had exchanged a few emails with her but never had the pleasure of meeting her in person. I sensed such sweet, deep empathy from her; a kindness and gentleness that is rarely seen these days. I felt her absence daily and was somewhat reluctant to continue my daily visits to her site.
I reread her memorial this evening and felt the pain of her loss roll over me AGAIN surprisingly hard. My heart still isn't ready to let her go. My grief feels fresh and new; strange words to say about someone who I never shook hands with or smiled at, although I smiled at the words she wrote. I wonder if she knew the impact she had on so many of us! Well she is in a better place just waiting for us. In my Father's house are many mansions .... hope mine is next to hers!

P.S. I forgot to say that I love the photos you've posted of Susan. They are lively and vibrant, and I'm sure that while she is looking down on all of us, that is what she wants us to be, too.

Please don't say good-bye, as in forever, just, say "see you later, Susan."

It was through death that I found thriftyfun, and I feel like I have really found a true home, here.

In 2008, a dog we rescued, and nurtured every day, died, we cried and cried, and my husband told me he wanted another lapdog. After a couple of weeks, I started searching the internet, and found a reference to a dog on thriftyfun. That was my first experience with thriftyfun, and I joined, and have never left.

Then, Susan died. It may sound overly sentimental to some of you, but I truly believe that my rescue dogs death lead me to thriftyfun.

I'd been to chatrooms, like AOL, but they just weren't me. Thriftyfun is a place where I can grow. I can get advice, give advice, and discover things that I never even knew in my own imagination. I love the sharing community of thriftyfun.

To Susan, I won't say "good-bye," but I will say, "See you later...when my time comes, at least I hope so."

To Susan's Family, You have kept up thriftyfun remarkably well, even after losing Susan.

From my heart, a special prayer for all of you--"God Bless You Well."

RE: Susan

Please let Susan know that she will be in my thoughts and prayers daily. She (and her ThriftyFun) are an important and pleasant part of my daily routine. I wish her a speedy recovery. Prayers are the biggest and best help. If there are other things we can do in addition please keep us informed. We all know how expensive medical issues are. Perhaps we can all contribute to a fund to help with that. It would be small thanks for all the help and pleasure she has given us. If that is a possibility please post an address where we could mail our "love donations" for her. "Get Well Soon, Susan!" (12/08/2008)

RE: Susan

Even though I've never actually met Susan in person, I bet she's QUITE the wonderful gal and I wish her the best and pray for her speedy recovery. She's always answered my e-mail questions quickly and has posted my questions as soon as possible. I can tell she works super-hard because my ex-husband ran a board somewhat like this and it took up most if not ALL of his time. I bet she puts most of her energy into ThriftyFun and we all benefit from her hard work! Logging on to ThriftyFun is an important and a very pleasant part of my day. What would my day or my coffee-time be without it? Even though I don't get out much or have many friends, I feel I have loads of friends here on this site and this gives me great contentment. In fact, when I need an answer, (like today when my browser failed to boot or when my cat does something strange) I know I can count on the folks here on ThriftyFun to help me out with their suggestions and answers. Thank You Susan for all you do! Cyinda

RE: Susan: ThriftyFun Says Goodbye

I am so sorry for your loss! ThriftyFun has been part of my life for about a year now, and I don"t know what I would do without it. Susan was quite a visionary to start this online community. My husband just graduated from college, and I also attend - we have 2 teenage children, so any way I can improve my family's life frugally is a boon. I won the $25.00 prize twice; when I thanked Susan & told her about my personal situation, her emails were so kind and supportive! It meant so much that someone I didn't know could be so caring. I am thankful for the influence she has had on her part of the world - just one person can truly change the world. My thoughts are with her family - my mother died 12 years ago, so I know that it leaves a hole in your heart. God bless you all! (12/28/2008)

RE: Susan: ThriftyFun Says Goodbye

I logged on to submit something clever, and saw that our leader and friend had passed away. I thought it might be someone else, but now I see it was not. I am crying right now, as I too feel I have lost a friend I never met. I tried twice to get up to see friends and relatives this year, and was going to stop and have a chat but never got to meet her. Because she said she was going to take some time off, I didn't even know she was sick until just 30 minutes ago, much less gone. I am so sorry for her family and her friends.

I hope she and her staff knew how much she was admired, loved, and respected. I look forward to all the cool things my email would send me, and would miss it terribly. But, I also understand if her loss means the loss of her website.

Please convey to her family our heartfelt condolences and that she will be missed more than she might have evern known.

RE: Susan: ThriftyFun Says Goodbye

Susan left a wonderful legacy of knowledge, vital information, fun and laughter. All we can hope for is that we leave the world a better place, and Susan certainly did that.

I too, was an occasional craft winner, and those checks always made a difference in my overstretched budget.

Susan reached out beyond the ezine and touched many lives. The arts and crafts, household hints and frugalities that she has helped her vast extended family share have enhanced all of our lives.

I am a better, happier person, having had Susan in my life, as we all are. I will smile through my tears and remember her with laughter and gratitude.

My deepest condolences to her family and staff. S.B. San Antonio TX (12/28/2008)

RE: Susan: ThriftyFun Says Goodbye

I don't know how Susan had the energy to keep up with all she did with ThriftyFun and other projects. And still treated each of us like WE were the only one that was important and special. Sending personal emails and notes. Doing favors by correcting mistakes we make.

I didn't believe it when I won $25.00 the first time. I asked her if it was a joke or scam. I was never lucky at winning things. Only once when I was in the 7TH. grade. I won an art contest by painting a circus poster for Ringling Bros. The Prize was 2 tickets to the circus and $25.00. I just thought it was amazing that both sums were the same so many years apart. Susan was so kind and I will miss her very much. I know the ThriftyFun Family is devastated, as we all are. Sending prayers for her family and the staff. We thank them for sharing her passion and joy with us. May

God give them the comfort of HIS love.

Rest now dear Susan.

RE: Susan: ThriftyFun Says Goodbye

For Susan : Don't grieve for me, for now I'm free ; I'm following the path God laid for me I took His hand when I heard Him call, I turned my back and left it all I could not stay another day. To laugh, to love, to work or play. Tasks left undone must stay that way. I found that peace at the close of the day. If my parting has left a void, Then fill it with remembered joy. A friendship shared, a laugh, a kiss, Ah, these things I, too, will miss. Be not burdened with time of sorrow, I wish for you the sunshine of tomorrow. My life's been full, I savored much. Good friends, good times, A loved one touch. Perhaps my time seemed all too brief, Don't lengthen it now with undue grief. Lift up your heart and share with me, God wanted me now, He set me free. Mere words can not express our sorrow, nor of our love for someone who has helped so many. She has helped people in so many ways, not merely by sharing tips on how to save money in these troubling times, but also by showing us that our SELF-worth is more then any combination of items that we could ever own. May the Divine lead her to the Summerlands of Peace, and ease the grief that we all feel deep in our hearts. Susan will be remembered with love forever.

Susan my sister, my mentor, my friend I agree your children are what you thought were your greatest works. There is no doubt you were one of the Creators greatest works.

I will not see you each Wednesday morning anymore but you will ALWAYS be with thoes of us who were lucky enough to have you as a friend.

I will miss your unending support and unique insight. (01/07/2009)

RE: Susan: ThriftyFun Says Goodbye

I barely remember you Sue, as the last time I saw you I was about 10-- but my Dad loved you and so without say I do as well. You were with him during his last memories and for that you are an Angel in my heart. Everything I have read about you tells a story I never knew, and wish somehow I had known. You seem like you were such a loving individual and true friend to many. I will consider you family for all time. It breaks me to hear this news. I wish I had known you better. :( Much love and sorrow combined, (01/20/2009)
