House Training an Older Puppy

I just got an 18 month old mini-Dachshund who is not trained. I put him in a crate for overnight and he got out. I found him in my bed. Today, I will put him in the crate and watch him. He is thin and the crate has been secure for other dogs. Any suggestions?
