Adding Fabric to the Reverse Side of a Comforter?

I have a comforter I really love, except that it is not reversible. I found a coordinating fabric that would be a perfect complement. I'd like to add a strip, about 10" wide to the reverse side of the comforter so when I make the bed I could fold it over and you'd see the complementary fabric. The problem is, I can't figure a way to attach it without either stitch ripping a large section of the comforter, or having to sew all the way through the whole thing. (It's too thick for that.) Suggestions would be appreciated!

Take the color you want cut it the size you want, leaving 1/4 inch seam allowance all around. Press down the seam allowance and sew it. It will look better if you use a machine. Since the comforter is thick, use pins to place it where you want it and use a slip stitch to sew it in place.

You are saying you want a 10" wide strip down each side so you can flip it up to show the "new" fabric?

  • First - are you sure that 10" will be sufficient?

  • How far over the side does your comforter hang? Or does it just "fit" the top of the bed?
  • I'm asking because if it is only 10" it may not stay "up" when you flip it - it might keep falling down.
  • Have you thought about making 2 or 3 hemmed 10" strips and "quilt" stitch them to the center (several inches apart) of your comforter? These strips could be placed horizontally or vertically on the top side of your comforter.
  • Another idea is to make a wide strip of your new fabric to go across your pillows. All it takes is a strip wide enough to cover your pillows and enough to tuck in under and behind the pillows. You can use enough to hang over the sides of the bed or just to the ends of the pillows.
  • The stitches would only have to go through the first layer and not the whole thickness.
  • If you are wanting the strips down each side you may be able to hold your comforter on each side and shake the filling toward the center enough to have a thinner edge to sew your hemmed strip to.

  • You do realize that if you do not place a double strip down each side you will always have to have the strip turned up or the backside of the new strip will be showing/hanging down each side?
