DIY Ombre Hair Colouring

contest winner icon
I love the gradual colour shift in ombre hair! I wanted to go boldly Aquarius with blues and teals in my hair for my birthday, but my local salons charge a few hundred dollars to do lightening and ombre colouring, especially with my long layered hair. Here is how to do semi-permanent ombre colouring yourself at home.

*Prior to this colour, I had dark blue and black hair. I used a Manic Panic bleach kit straight on my blue and black hair and it lifted it to a yellow green, which I liked as a lightened base for this colour change in particular.

Total Time: 60 minutes

Supplies:

Steps:

  1. Put on an old t-shirt and gloves. Make sure your lightened hair is completely dry. Decide where you want your hair colour to transition. Section your hair into several strands (I did about 16 total) and wrap a rubber band around each strand where you want the colour to change. Because I have layered hair, I moved the rubber bands up higher for the shorter strands.
  2. Begin saturating the top of your hair with your first colour (my blue), making sure not to miss any spots.
  3. Apply the hair colour all the way to rubber banded area. Make sure you do not go below it.
  4. Once you've coated the top half with the first colour (my blue), remove all the rubber bands from your hair. Take the hard comb side of the dye brush and comb the blue down a bit.
  5. Flip the comb over to the soft bristle side and brush the hair colour down with that side. This will help make the awesome transition effect!
  6. Take the second colour (my teal) and apply to the very bottom of your lightened hair strands.
  7. Work the colour upwards. When you reach the transition area, take your gloved fingers and pull the lower colour up into the top colour and blend, rubbing up and down. This will give you an awesome looking transition. Let colours sit in hair for about 30-45 minutes (read your dye instructions), then rinse with water until it runs clear. Use a deep conditioner weekly.

My favourites, too! Didn't think I could pull off the greenish tones, but why not at least try, right?

Thank you so much! :) I love doing my own hair. I had my mum help me so these step-by-step photos could exist... But it's not difficult. Like artwork on your head!
