Dog Aggressive to Other Resident Dog?

I have a Jack Russell and she has been attacking our 18 year old Chihuahua. Every time the chihuahua squeals like she is in pain. Any suggestions on curbing this behavior?

I would consult the vet, especially if this is new behavior. There could be a physical illness or reaction to medication. The vet could prescribe something to calm him down. You may also want to consider a professional dog trainer.

Have both dogs checked,if this has suddenly started, there is a reason for it! They are your family and a vet can let you know more before anything else happens!

Is this a new behavior or has it been going on since the dogs got together?

If it is new, I would have BOTH dogs checked out.

--The younger dog may know that the older one is ill. Dogs are bred from wolves and in the wild if a young wolf thinks and old wolf is ill and may not survive, the young wolf has been known to euthanize the old one to prevent suffering and protect the integrity of the pack.

-The younger dog also needs to be checked for a change in neurological health (especially if the older one gets a clean bill of health).

If this behavior has been going on for a long time, is time to talk to your vet about a good dog trainer and potentially a pheromone or other calming strategy for the older dog and something to reduce the anxiety of the older dog who sounds like is being traumatized from these attacks.

A short term fix really needs to be keeping the dogs separated until this is resolved for both their safety and well being. This situation is not healthy for either of them. Even if it is using a baby gate or a crate, or a closed door, they need to be kept apart so neither hurts the other.

Post back with an update. Prayers.

This is not normal. You other dog is getting on in age and could be sick or have a problem. Normally if two dogs have been raised together it is a bit strange that they start attacking each other and it is not playing.

I would take the dogs to the vet to have them checked. Maybe the older dog is getting sick and the other dogs feels this.

Whatever the reason for the attacks, attacking an 18 year old dog should not be allowed to continue. She could be badly hurt. An 18 year old chihuahua is pretty defenseless. Keep them safely separated until you talk to your Vet and come up with a plan. Perhaps a muzzle for the Jack Russel until things get worked out.
