Dog Poops Inside at Parents' Home?

My dog generally stays at my apartment all day. She rarely poops inside. Half the time we take her out in the middle of the day and she doesn't poop.

On occasion if she is home alone for a longer than a normal period of time with no outside breaks she will, but I do not consider that her fault.

Now when she is at my parents house, on days that I will be gone longer, she poops inside almost every time. I don't know why! The difference between my apartment and my parents' is they have 1 other dog and 2 cats. Could this be because she eats the other dog food or because she eats cat poop? Could it be anxiety?

Since there are other animals there, she is marking her territory. Clean the area with an enzyme cleaner to take the smell away, or she will keep going back to that spot.

She should not be eating cat poop. I would speak to the vet about that.

Poop issues--especially if it is in just one situation--has always been anxiety or stress for my fur kids.

You could talk to the vet about something to keep the pup calm when at your parent's home. They could recommend a pill or maybe even a very low dose of bendryl to relax the pup. NEVER medicate without the vet approval especially for dosing as
dosign is dependent on weight and other factors that the vet needs to tell you!!

You could also think about keeping the pup in a crate when at your folks, as they usually don't poop in their crates (my dear Carmel Ann, may she rest in peace, was the exception to that rule...but only when she was extremely stressed and when she was very old and had trouble with control).

Pups are like people and different things stress them out. Hopefully you can find something that will help your pet visit your folks place without having the poop accidents.

Prayers for all!

it is most likely territorial behaviour. I don't know how to cure this as she is being triggered by the other dogs. This behaviour is unacceptable and it should be trained out of it, or else you can't have your dog at your parents' house

Hi,

I think that at your parents house, your dog does not feel at home and cannot relax. If this is the case, and the other dogs are causing her stress and anxiety, then she will continue to do this. Possibly a covered crate would help her to feel more relaxed.

Dogs and cats do not really like changes in their environment or especially their routines. She is usually alone most of the day (?) and maybe the just being around the other animals is causing her stress.

  • You should try to find a solution or this may affect her behavior when she is home.
  • A very big problem is that once an animal has "gone" in an area, they will continue to return to that area until the smell is completely removed. An enzyme cleaner will remove the odors that we may not smell as dogs can smell a scent much better than humans.

  • It is possible that your parent's animals have also - at one time or other - had accidents in their home and your dog will definitely "go" in that area.
  • Your best solution may be a crate but they are a lot of trouble unless you can leave it at their home. The problem with this is that if their animals visit the cage your dog may not like it and may continue the problem there.
  • Your parents may not even know if their animals have had an accident in the past as many times it may go unnoticed with that many animals living in a home.

  • It is not an uncommon thing for dogs to eat cat poop and an occasional time will not hurt them but you should ask your parents to place their litter box someplace that your dog cannot get to or he may get sick.

  • Some pet owners use a product called Rescue when they take their pets away from home. It is not harmful when used as directed.
