Eligibility for Survivor Benefits?

My friend's sister died and left her 8 year old child to her care. Are there survivor benefits for this child to sign up for?

If she paid into it, long enough. Whoever is the care giver for the child needs to make an appointment with the social security office. That person needs to take an original death certificate, her social security number, the birth certificate of the child and the childs soical security number. The moms name must match the name on the birth certificate. If it has changed, due to marriage or divorce, those records also need to go to the appointment. Lastly, they will ask for proof of guardianship from the sister. The benefits don't go to the child. They go to the caretaker.

This is completely correct. From first hand experience, this is exactly what I had to do to receive survivor benefits for my siblings after our mother passed away.

She should make an appointment with Social Security and bring proof of death and proof that she is now the legal guardian.

Is the father alive? Is he paying child support?

Need to clarify what responsibility the father may have and provide this information to SSA.

If your sister worked then her daughter would be eligible for survivor benefits.
