Eligibility for social Security Survivor Benefits?

My mother who is 92 years old was married to my step dad for 38 years. He passed away in December last year. She filed to receive SS benefits from him and was denied the claim. I somehow feel she is entitled to them still. Does anybody know anything about this type of situation or who to call other than the Social Security office? So, if it's no then it's no but if there's a way we would like to pursue this matter completely, just to make sure. Thanks for any help at all. Who do we call, affordability matters?

Only the SSA office can answer your question. You can make an appointment to learn more information, why your mother's claim was denied and what options there may be.

This is a follow up to my previous message. The reason I remember the age as it refers to divorce when I went into the social security office when I turned 65 I asked if I would draw more getting half my former husband's or mine. The lady told me I COULD NOT draw his. I knew she didn't know what she talking about and when I confronted her about it she left her desk, came back and said You're right. Go to the social security website and check it out.

Was she divorced from your Dad. The last I checked the rule was once divorced if she remarried she could not draw on from his benefits. I researched this awhile back because I'm divorced after 19 years of marriage.

My x is still alive but I remember the rules change if she remarried before she turned 60. Go to ss.gov.
