Rats like food, water and nesting material. Get rid of those first.
We have a three year old cat named Katy who was a feral kitten when we had her. She has calmed down a lot but she knows how to catch rats. We have recently seen rats outside our house and Katy has caught and killed them all bringing them to our doorstep as presents, as cats do.
Try to clean up as much as possible, even piles of leaves and bird seed left on ground overnight. Are you saying your animals never go outside? How about neighbors pets? There are several good poisons available at stores like Walmart, Lowes, Home Depot, and Ace Hardware but be sure this is what you want to use.
You can use Borax but it may have to be to be replaced after a rain but it can be used indoors also as it is not harmful to pets (only bugs).

We live across the street from the sewer. Rats come up occasionally. My dad has a big cage to catch them.. baits them with sweet food.
