Growing Daylilies?

I have daylilies growing in my yard. I have yellow, red, and orange. They were just beautiful. I noticed that all of the lilies that bloomed first are gone now. Just the flowers, the stems and pistols remain. Will these re-bloom? They just started blooming. Now the other colors are there and the orange are gone. :(

Daylillies need extra care to keep blooming all season - particularly dead heading the spent blooms and removing the stalk after all blooms have opened.

  • Some sites say "rebloom" but what they usually mean is that another stalk with "scapes" will appear and new flowers will bloom.
  • Here is a short explanation:
  • "Day lily flowers appear on stalks called scapes. Many flowers can bloom on a single scape but each bloom only remains open for a single day. Each day lily plant has numerous scapes and can produce hundreds of blooms in a season."

  • Since the bloom only lasts for a day that means for a good healthy plant, spent blooms have to be removed almost daily.
  • Maybe reading several sites for maintenance information will help you with how to take care of your lilies to keep them blooming longer.
  • Take your pick of sites to check.

My yellow ones sometimes bloom twice (now and Sept) but my orange ones only bloom once and are gone. My ex also had the orange ones and his also only bloomed once and were done.

It could be the PA weather...so maybe where you are the conditions are more favorable.

Daylillies bloom once and do not bloom again until the next season.

I think they are lovingly called "One-a-Day Lilies" because that is just about what they do -----------bloom for one day. Mine never bloom again but once a year and here in N C that is just what they are doing right now.

They do come back every year with out having to do any thing to them.

I also have the orange ones. Mine only bloom once. Did you know that you can eat day lilies? You can put them in salads and you can sauté them and serve them alone or with other vegetables. They are nice inside an omelet.
