Home Repair Assistance for Low Income Families?

We are a family that is on disability. We bought a home on land contract and lived there from 2001 till last year (2016) when the A/C went out. For a week in the summer the house's average temperature was 95+. With my health it almost killed me.

We had a friend try to give us a house to move into. So we did. But, come to find out they did not have the right to do it. Now we have been told that we have until the end of April to move out. The only thing we can do is move back to our old house. Where we need to gut most of the house. Some things we know that need work are: carpet removal, junk removal, plumbing repairs, painting walls and floors, window repair or replacement, the roof needs work, and the A/C. The problem is I'm disabled and only have SSI income. I can't do any work, but we have some friends that would love to help our family out with the work.

We live in a small town in the middle of Nebraska. We need to know if there is any help available through the government or private agencies? I have searched high and low without any luck. I'm about to the end of my rope without help in sight. Thanks for your time and any help I can get.

I would go to HUD, churches, and Habitat for Humanity.

You keep saying "we" but you only mention yourself as being on SSI and cannot work. Are there other adults in the "we"? If so, are working? Are there children living with this/your family?

All of these are questions that most any organization will be asking before even discussing any assistance and, as a general rule, all assistance will be based on whether you own the home and the total income of the family. Also, many places do not do everything "free" of cost.
Here are some links to organizations that offer help to qualified recipients:

i would definitely look at work-arounds such as energy assistance programs. here is a governmental one in nebraska- www.benefits.gov/.../1560 if you or another family member is a senior and/or disabled you should search for free room acs so u can live there while fixing up the rest.

many communities and utilities have low-cost window replacement for people in similar situations

Another thing some agencies will check to be sure you are up to date on your real estate taxes before they help. That is to ensure they aren't going to help you redo it and then have it go to a tax sale.
