Home Repair Assistance for Low Income Homeowner?

I'm disabled with a child. I bought a house from an auction about four years ago. I have bad credit and need my house repaired to live in. I'm in Cleveland Ohio. Who can help me fix my house?

Sending up prayers that you find the help you need.

There is a program if you are in the city proper:

www.city.cleveland.oh.us/.../DivisionofNeighborhoodServices

If you aren't, my suggestions are:

1. Do you belong to a religious organization (church, synagogue, mosque etc.)? Some have discretionary funds that are used to help parishioners in need. It is all very private and no one needs to know. Perhaps they can help fund repairs or know of people from the congregation to help make the repairs

2. Since you have a computer and are posting here, have you considered setting up a Go Fund Me or like crowd sourcing pages?
They are fairly easy to do, you tell your story and ask for help. I know from first hand experience they work if you work to get the message out there.

3. Do you have a Habitat for Humanity or other like organization in your area who could offer help or guidance? www.habitat.org/ There is a search on the site for local entities.

Good luck!

Call HUD for assistance at their toll free number (800) 955-2232. You can get yourself on their list for assistance.

You state that you are disabled and have a child but you do not say if you receive disability assistance from any organization or if you are on Medicaid programs so this information may help us offer the right type of programs.

  • If you are on SSI and receive a benefit check for you and your child this fact could help you receive help from several sources.
  • If you are not on SSI then you may have a difficult time qualifying for some of the suggested free home improvement grants.
  • Having low income, disability problems and having a child (age?) may help you qualify but having bad credit may be a problem. The reasons for the bad credit may be a factor in applying.
  • People who have never had to apply to HUD or even to Habitat probably have no idea as to the extent their qualifying process extends.
  • HUD is a very intimidating office and it is very difficult to get through even the first process of talking to someone who can direct you to the right office/person that might be able to help you.

  • HUD is in the "business" of helping people find housing, assisting the aging, assisting veterans, Indian affairs, and helping repair homes is not one of their priorities.
  • HUD offers grants to some local companies for helping low income families with home repairs but that budget gets very little money so not many people can be helped each year.
  • Habitat does try to help with home repairs if they are not too extensive (I have worked with my local Habitat) but then again, it is not that easy to qualify and it is rare that any type of major plumbing, electrical or roofing repairs will be done as these require city/county permits and must have qualified licensed workers and this type of person (maybe one licensed person in each field) works on new housing and has very little "spare" time for extra home repairs.

  • The link that Pghgirl40 supplied is for local help if you are in the right area but it is for granting a loan and does not offer free grants. If you can make payments on a loan (payments would probably be low) then you should apply at this office first.
  • development.ohio.gov/summary_26housingassistance.htm
  • Here is the web site for your local HUD office but it will be very difficult to find where you need to apply. You can try calling their local office listed on this page. If you call their national number they will only direct you to this office.
  • If you would like to read about some of these grant programs, these web sites have good information.
  • homeguides.sfgate.com/determine-eligibility-home-improvement...
  • homeguides.sfgate.com/hud-home-repair-grants-8167.html
  • It may benefit you to talk with someone in family services in your area as they may be able to help you cut through some of the paperwork necessary to apply for any of these grants. They may also have information on local resources that can help you. You might start here:

  • You can also try contacting a local government official to see if they can help direct you to the right place for assistance with your repairs.
