Home Repair Assistance for Low Income Homeowners?

I have a friend that needs help with the house and a AC unit that is free or cheap because they are on disability and have no extra money to fix the house. Please let me know what I can do to get it fixed and a AC unit.

Many times there is help available within your state that may not be available elsewhere.
Google house repair assistance for low income with your zip code and check what is available locally before seeking other help.

  • There are several government agencies that have programs to help low income/disabled families but there are strict qualifications.
  • Most of these agencies do not do "emergency" repairs and their paper work is very slow in processing.
  • Even if help is approved it may be a long wait before any repairs are started as there is always a waiting list and then many times money runs out and some may have to wait until more money is approved (maybe the following year).
  • You can read some of the information on the following links to see if they wish to apply.
  • homeguides.sfgate.com/apply-home-improvement-grants-47599...
  • Habitat for Humanity does sometimes help with problems like this and they may offer help faster than government agencies. Check their site for an office in your area.

  • If they belong to a local church you might be able to get some help from other members. Ask for help at the church office.
  • Just as information, families with children will usually be placed in line before low income families so the wait can sometimes be a year or longer.
  • HUD may suggest they move into an assisted living facility instead of doing repairs.

Habitat for Humanity offers a resale shop called ReStore. They have all sorts of things like that

if an AC is all you need then just put a request in WANTED or BARTER (if you have something of value to actually exchange) on your local craigslist - that works sometimes
