Identifying a Bavarian China Tea Service?

Identifying a Bavarian China Tea Service - a pale blue china tea set with gold trim. This is a Bavarian tea set. An artist signed M.E. on the bottom of the plate, and "Bavaria Germany" appears on the other pieces. That is all the information that I have. Does anyone recognize this? Also, how would you describe that finish? It looks like a softly glazed surface, in person. The color is a very soft, like robin's egg, blue. Any help appreciated.

Your Bavarian tea set is worth about 100.00 on E-BAY.

If you are asking to sell your piece, I suggest that you have someone in your town look at this in person to tell you what you have--my reasons are below. Unfortunately I would not even venture to give you a value guestimate until I know exactly what you have here.

The challenges here are:

It is hard to tell from the photo the size. It could be a child's set--but photos are deceiving if it is an adult or child set.

The only artist I am familiar with that uses ME on items is Mary Engelbreit (which would make this quite new), but the mark does not match the ones of hers that I am familiar with--but I do not know all of her markings.

The glass looks like it could be lusterware--but if it is new, it is reproduction-lusterware. The challenge here is some milkglass (even those with color) can be confused with milkglass--so the only way to tell is with an in-person look.

Also, there are so many things I can't see or feel--like the weight of the pieces and the hand feel of the glass. Is it thick? Is it thin? I

That is why an in person look is so important to knowing what you have.

Additionally the marking "Bavaria Germany" started being used in the late 1800s, but is still used today. Typically the big name brands used markings other than initials on pieces--so the other thought if it is not Mary Engelbreit, it could be a set by a home artist. If that is the case, you may have to sell it as a OOAK (or one of a kind) piece--which may or may not impact the value to sell.

I feel bad I can't be of more help....glassware like this is very tricky to ID even for an experienced reseller like me, which is why I defer to someone who specializes in Bavarian glassware to look.

I am not sure anyone on Thrifty is a Bavarian glassware expert--although one gal who posts--cybergrannie may recognize this piece from her breadth of experience! I hope she weighs in as I always learn from her!!

Post back what you learn!

Your set is a puzzle as the marking does not really provide very much information and it is rare that true Bavarian china does not have a brand/maker name - where as yours does not.

I believe this alone makes your service less valuable and probably very difficult to find information as research is usually done by brands or artist name or maker's marks.

I cannot tell the size - whether it is full size or demitasse so if you do any research be sure to include some sort of description as to size.
If your set is a pale blue it does not come through as this in your pictures so try to get a picture in different light maybe that shows the true color.

You also have 2 different patterns as one of the sugar & creamer does not match the tea pot.
Bavaria china sets are very plentiful which tends to lower the value of even brand name sets.
Check out the sold prices on eBay and many of these will have cups and saucers with the set.

You might want to post your question to Replacements to see if they can provide any information.

There are other china forums that may be able to help:

I have a sugar/cream set I'm trying to research that ALSO has the same initials "ME" but on my piece it's more of a mark because the "M" and the "E" share the same vertical line. Below the mark, "Bavaria" appears and below that, is the number 32.

The words are printed rather than inscribed and the piece is rather thick and heavy making me think it is likely the same maker as with Lisa's piece, but much later. Looks like the maker began numbering their pieces?

Lisa L. Do you have any further information on yours? Does the information I have added shed any further insight?
